Anyone trying for extra tasty delayed harvest blueberries?
Comments (5)Eric: Ya, this is in the greenhouse. It could be done outdoors with netting. I would have thought the flavor would be lost with fruit hanging this long. But this is a strong taste I haven't had elsewhere and worth the effort. Did you say on another post that you had 20 bushes and got three gallons of fruit? I'm getting a gallon per potted bush. And that's with a lot of pruning out of small wood and thinning fruit. I had very good foliage this year and was extra hard thinning so may be below a gallon per bush but not much....See Moresquirrels? blood meal should look pure white !!!
Comments (0)There are packaging out there that states it's Blood Meal and contains about 95% of other darker colored ingrediences listed in a much smaller print on the bag. Point 1 - Logic dictates if the city monkey is thirsty and you have something that's of a fluid base, city monkeys are going to preserve themselves. Therefore, if you provide a birdbath that they can get into of which they also learn from the birds is a place to drink, they will go there, more often then to your tomatoes. However, it won't keep then from wanting to try something different. I voach for blood meal. NOT BONE MEAL. For vegtables. Try to spinkle the leaves and stems closest to the fruit/veg. Only a lil' should do. I've always had an over abundance of tomatoes from my family garden so I've never put blood meal there. You's might want to try a lil' right on the reachable tomatoes and see how goes. Would be washed off at watering fairly frequently and need to be reapplied every now and then. If anybody knows if this would burn/damage the tomotoe's skin they should leave a follow up. Test 1 or 2 sacrificable tomotoes if your going to try this in the mean time. They do get discouraged after a month or so, especially if there's a birdbath to turn to to instead. Flower gardens: Apply it over the ground where you're bulbs are if that's your problem...that's mine. Lots of times, they're just digging to see if there's something to eat under a plant or storing some food for the winter. But ohhh, they do detest the smell of pure blood meal. The first month or so of foliage growth, during the time your not expecting flowers anyway would be benefitial to have more nitrogen to help grow your plants faster anyway. Thus, the more Nitrogen the better, at first anyway.-Sandy...See MoreThere's some mighty tasty food in Iowa! A Review...
Comments (19)Haven't tried the calamari at Noah's. I love chicken livers and every time I tried them I was disappointed. We used to go to the Monterey all the time and then we discovered Los Laureles. Much better in my opinion. MIL doesn't like it because too many Mexican's eat there. A good sign to me! We have eaten at Babe's once before they closed and never at Anjo's. Tried Tumea and Son's the other day for the first time and it was very good. Off to try some German culinary delights tomorrow. Going to visit family in Berlin....See MoreMy 60th Birthday Meal(s)… What Was I Thinking? : )
Comments (69)Sleevendog, the wonderful thing about belated Birthday well-wishes is that they extend the happiness : ) And thank you both (Islay, too) for the Charcuterie Definition. I didn’t know the French pronunciation, but doubt I’ll use it here, or even the word charcuterie. Most here would think me pretentious, which is silly as I like to use words correctly. So, does this mean if I make canadian bacon or pastrami (from pork), I can (temporarily) call myself a Charcutier? LOL! Well, I just might anyway! Sleevendog, thank you also for mentioning the free-edge/live-edge board. That was my gift to myself : ) I think it’s so beautiful! I often toss together a board (the bread board above was from an old restaurant, the charcuterie with live edge from Etsy) of cheeses, crackers, meats, apples, grapes… whatever I have on hand, for pre-dinner snacking, or lunch nibbling. I wanted a larger, prettier board than the bread board : ) Funny thing is, when I bought my first furniture, the area in which I lived had tons of furniture with free-edging/live edging (horizontal slice tree trunks, vertical slabs). And they were cheap! And huge! I bought a large one for my coffee table on a major budget. New! After a while, the area was over-saturated with them, and I couldn’t give mine away when upgrading. Truth! So when they first came out, it took me a while to not see them as ‘cheap’ stuff! I have learned a new appreciation… everything old is new again : ) I think it looks both rustic and fine, simultaneously. I am a wood grain lover. And while I have your attention, those flageolet beans? Amazing. We can’t stop eating them on salads. I’m making some with leftover too-salty ribs, shredded, and roasted tomatoes next. Mercurygirl, you sound like me, I’ve moved several plants, including roses. Hard to keep up with where they are until they leaf out or bloom! Naturegirl, you are most welcome! Edie, I have one of those rolling pins! So heavy! I am sure you can roll it out thin enough. I would recommend a few things… if using crackers for cheeses, don’t add cheese to the cracker dough, just make them as is, and perhaps toss in some dried herbs (the flavor of dried herbs does come through) as appropriate. If serving with a soup, or alone, cheese tastes wonderful : ) Annie, don’t do what I did, though, and over prep/cook! I was feeling a bit frazzled by the time the day rolled around! But yes, making lots of nibbles satisfies everyone. And they can be easy ones. BTW, your hummus was wonderful! Thank you! I froze some, and hope that’s ok....See Morelibrarian_gardner_8b_pnw
