prune Japanese maple?

Last year I purchased a Sango Kaku coral bark Japanese maple from Fast growing trees. It has a thick crown and after looking closely it has 2 to narrow crotch angles on both of the tallest lead branches. They seem to be competing leaders on both. Is this normal for this type of JM? Very nervous to cut a whole branch off. Guess I’m looking for second opinions from people who have done this.
