Speaking of movies....recommendations sought

As a spinoff from the movies thread, I have essentially not gone to the movies for the last 35 years. I may have seen a few, but basically, not many. I have borrowed a few from the library, but not many. For example, the only Disney animated movie I've ever seen was Bambi. I have never seen Avatar, Jurassic Park, or any Harry Potter. The last Academy Award winner I saw was Argo. I've seen Life of Pi and American Sniper, and I think I saw The Big Short. But essentially nothing since.

If I wanted a list of must see movies since, say, 1990, what would you put on the list?

At first I thought that was a satellite dish on your clothesline. What an easy way to tweak the aim! Yeah, that's a swinging bridge. Just wondering how much fun you want to interject. But conventional deck style construction would probably be easier. With the existing deck going away I see the space between the two existing trees as a better route for a bridge to pass through than to the right of this. A better destination is more toward the center of the container than where the ladder is. I think the bridge should start very near top of grade. (There's no point in going down the hill a ways only to go back up a different hill which is what moving it all to the right seems like it will do.) While this might make the bridge longer, it's probably only going to need support posts at about every 8' of it's length, or so. And probably some angle bracing. That's as though the bridge were supported in two evenly spaced places along its length and at each end. 4 supports (pairs of posts or "anchors") total.

Mine actually comes with a story. Every since the first pictures of "Linda Sue" showed up on the web back in 2003 or so, I have been trying to locate a division. I couldn't find it anywhere, and actually used my Internet tracking skills and came up with a phone number for this person called "Van Wade". I had no idea who it was. As a newbie to difficult-to-find cultivars then, I called and left a number, not knowing that I think the call wound up on a personal phone. I got a callback from his wife(?) nicely asking how I knew about "Linda Sue" and how I got the phone number I had called. I stammered all over myself. She took my name and number, and called 2-3 years later to say it was now available. At that point I didn't buy it because I was suffering horrendous losses to the Deer. I've been unwilling to part with the bucks for a mature division and didn't want to do a little TC. It looks like 2011 may be the year that I finally get that one.

Pam, I'm inclined to agree with Carol that you've come to the wrong place. Surely you know that we'll just tell you to plant everything that you can shoehorn into the ground....and then will encourage you to plant some of your leftover plants into containers...and then to make more beds. There is no self-discipline here at my house, but of course, I can not speak for anyone else here except to say that a lot of us grow a whole lot of stuff! I figure out how many plants of each vegetable I have room to plant, than I start seeds for at least twice that many. That gives me backup plants in case a worst-case-scenario hard freeze, snow storm, hail storm or wind storm hits after everything is in the ground. I have no trouble giving away the extra plants. I give away some of them locally and take the rest to the OK Forum's Spring Fling every April. I try to can things on a two or three-year rotation. In a good tomato year, I might can, freeze or dry enough to last 2 or 3 years. Then, the year after that I plant fewer tomatoes since I need less for canning, and instead I use that space for something else like sweet corn or pickling cucumbers. You never know when you'll have a crop failure, so I try to can more than 1 year's worth of something (or freeze it or dry it) in a good year, knowing the inevitable bad year will roll around and I'll be happy to have extra food of that type preserved. I also take into consideration how much extra I'd like to have to give away. I never had any trouble giving away the extra tomatoes and peppers, and since we have so many friends who are not gardeners, I try to ensure we have plenty to share. It is rare that every single thing will produce great every year. With our recurring droughts and because pests are so much more prolific in drought years, there's always something that underperforms. The following year, I always plant more of whatever we lacked the year before. So, last year we had poor mid-season and late-season corn crops because it got too hot for them to pollinate/fertilize well, so I'll plant a lot more corn this year. If I get enough to can and/or freeze 2 years worth, that's what I'll do. I also consider what an item will cost me at the grocery store, and try to plant a lot of stuff that is pricey. Organic sugar snap peas are a good example of this. In stores near us, the last time I bought organic sugar snaps, I believe they were $2.79 for a 10-oz. bag. Since I can only grow sugar snaps in spring, I plant tons of them and freeze all I can. Sweet corn, on the other hand, is fairly inexpensive in the summer so I don't necessarily feel compelled to plant huge amounts of it. Still, I prefer fresh-from-the-garden organic corn to the sometimes dry and tired-looking ears I'll see in the local stores. I only grow what we like and will eat, so plant lots of the things we like the most. I could grow 200 heads of cabbage a year. I have space, and it is simple to grow---but you only need so much cabbage at a given time, and if I make a dozen or two dozen jars of sauerkraut, we're set for the year. So, ask yourself how much you want for fresh eating plus for preserving and only plant that much. I enjoy canning, but it wears me out in a year when the tomatoes and the fruit trees are producing heavy crops all at the same time. Don't plant more than you want to can. Last summer I canned at least 4 days a week, usually all day long, for 6 to 8 weeks. That's a lot of long days in the kitchen. I didn't mind it because I had been too busy with constant wildfires in 2011 to can much of anything, so wanted to restock all the shelves. Still, I'm relieved to know I won't "have to" can as much this year. If you plant a lot more than y'all will eat and you feel like you absolutely must can all of it, you can cause yourself some serious gardening and canning burnout. There's only so many hours in a week available for canning. Ask yourself how many days a week and how many hours a day you'll have available for canning, and don't plan to harvest more than you can preserve unless you're going to give it away. Usually I only have too many tomatoes, onions, peppers and fruit to preserve. Everything else, I restrain myself and plant only what we can eat and what we'll give away. Okra produces like crazy here, but how much okra will one family eat? Pace yourself. I love gardening and canning, but there were days last year where I was doing too much of both and starting to get tired of it all. Luckily, I got over that feeling! Dawn

Wow. Thanks for all the great feedback. I should explain that our house is a contemporary, open floor plan, post and beam. To the left of the little, turned, cabinet which is to the left of the fridge, is the entry to our house. Outside the entry is a small, unheated, mudroom. I mention the unheated part because that matters a lot in Maine in the winter! We have a second project which will be financed next year to change the large combo bathroom/laundry room to the left on the entry into a mudroom w/stacked W/D, and a separate powder room space. Rhome: The reason I wanted the end cabinet of the island higher than the rest of the island is to house outlets and to hide any mess from the front entry hall. Does this make sense? Bmore: You and Rhome are right about dog dishes. I think I need to put dog dish in laundry room or I will ruin my floors! So I guess I could have that end island cabinet go to the floor if I want. Also, the cabinet beside the fridge is turned to give me little drop zone when I walk in. Over it, hanging on the fridge side panel will be a memo board, key holder, etc... I actually can't move the refrigerator further to the left. The little jog in that turned cabinet's counter is wrapping it around one of the house's structural posts. Toward the top of the post the ships' knee comes out at an angle and continues up to the beam. The refrigerator can't go back to the wall until the angle of the ship's knee is at a high enough arc to allow it. That happens at 11.5 inches to the right of the post. This is for a 70" tall fridge, not the fridge cabinet which is wood and can of course be cut. I have thought about a prep sink, but I honestly don't need one. We are living in this floor plan now and I do not feel it is necessary. TracieErin: In order for the hutch to feel related to the rest of the kitchen I have the fridge wrapped in the warm brown(amaretto)and the hutch wrapped in it as well. The hutch doors are soft gray. The island cabinets are gray to tie in the hutch doors. The end island cabinet is intended to be wrapped in amaretto with gray drawer fronts. The island counter top is planned to be end cut walnut butcher block. The periphery cabinets are probably some whitish/grayish cambria but maybe Alaska White granite. Do you think it is not a cohesive design? If I decide to bring the fridge cabinet back up to the beam to match the hutch I could do its doors in gray, would you feel that brings more cohesion? Though my plan had really been to keep the fridge lower and use the top as a display space. Lavenderlass: I agree one level island with a prep sink would be nice but I don't think I will miss the prep sink, though I think I would get used to it fast if I had it. I have a couple of reasons: If I don't have outlets in the back of that raised section my understanding is that outlets will interfere with/take away from drawers in the island. If I have a prep sink in my walnut butcher block it should really be varnished, not finished with wood oil, and then I can't chop on it. If I have the raised end, I really don't want to also give up counter to the prep sink. Also, I appreciate your idea about the tall cabinet and the raised valance, but I don't think it will work for me. From the top of the window to the bottom of the beam I only have about 15 inches and I need to put wall mount lights there or I will be washing my dishes in the dark. I can't do ceiling mount lighting because there is no ceiling just the floor above with sheet rock applied to it and no room for electric between. Fortunately I do not need window treatments for privacy, just us and the animals. I have seen the Big Chill and used to go to the movies a lot as a teen and in college. It was after that that my viewing fell off. So really 1990 and after would be the recommendations I'm looking for. IIRC, I've wanted to see A Beautiful Mind but never did. I wanted to see Green Book but never did. I did see Hidden Figures and enjoyed it.

Hmmm...maybe I should've set the date later? rob, I've seen all of those but the last 2. I've seen Moonstruck. No, I don't do any streaming services.

I have not seen The Princess Bride, Big Fish, CODA, A Man Called Otto or any indie movies. I have not seen Shrek, Banshees of Insherin, Power of the Dog, Big Night, The Intouchables or American Hustle.

These are great...I can see I'm going to have to build a list.

I was making a Greek dinner the other evening and we were inspired to (again) watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding while eating our dinner on trays. What a great, enjoyable, wonderful, happy movie!

Another great movie is Broken Bridges with Toby Keith, Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds and cameos with Willie Nelson, BeBe Wyans, etc. Great story and some seriously great music!

More: Hidden Figures; Hook; The DaVinci Code (with Tom Hanks- I love this movie!); De-Lovely (Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd were fantastic in the story about the brilliant and complex Cole Porter); The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel; Bohemian Rhapsody.

We just again watched The Greatest Showman the other night. So well done with Hugh Jackman!

Big Fish was really good.

Some excellent older indie films I discovered during 2020 lockdown and really liked were The Hippopotamus(2017), Toast, Flashbacks Of A Fool, and The Extra Man(2010)

I'm not much of a moviegoer, but I did see and absolutely love "Driving Miss Daisy" with Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, although it might be a bit before your specified timeline.

And "Pretty Woman" with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts is another I really enjoyed.

I liked Miss Peregrine's too - it was very well done - an intriguing story too.

If you're OK with family/animated movies, you might enjoy Coraline - which is a movie I have rewatched often and enjoyed every time. The animation is fabulous, and the story is from Neil Gaiman.

Do you ever use IMDB.com? I use it frequently - it has details about just about any movie or TV show you can think of, and all the people who've made them. There are also user reviews there, and links to published ones as well. It's a great resource, when trying to decide what to watch.

We have all of the Harry Potter movies on disc and watch them multiple times, as well as the Lord of the Rings movies - all early 21st Century releases. We also have Thor, as he is my favorite super hero. Spiderman is one of the best, but the Batman and Superman movies are also good. I'm not a fan of action movies in general, but these are worth watching.

I really liked Avatar and Beowulf as well. I particularly like ancient stories, myths, fantasies, and legends, and that might not be an interest of yours.

I've only seen four of the movies that others have recommended so far.

84 Charing Cross Road, i love this one.

Crossing Delancey, so sweet.

And for fantasy, Midnight in Paris.

Draft Day and Moneyball. I have little interest in sports but these are excellent movies.

Best in Show. The cast!

Julie and Julia. It’s just fun. and like Best in Show, has Jane Lynch.

Legally Blonde is just so fun.

The Notebook is a favourite as well as The Green Book, about a jazz pianist. Mr Church is also excellent. If you like action, Mr and Mrs Smith with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is good.

Did anyone mention Knives Out, and the followup, Glass Onion? Great old-fashioned mysteries.

And Ford vs Ferrari. I would normally stay away from a movie about car racing, but this one is wonderful. Carroll Shelby and the rivalry with Ferrari at LeMans.

Of movies I've seen recently, Vengeance is probably my favorite. It's funny, has sort of a surprise ending, and I loved the scenery. (Who knew the desert in Texas was so spectacular!) For an older film, I've seen Bill Murray's The Man Who Knew Too LIttle a few times and it always makes me laugh until I can barely catch my breath. Sometimes I watch clips from it on YouTube as a little pick me up.
