Width or Depth for Roots

I know width....but let me just hear it....

Picked up a Jr Specimen Maple. 10G and in the pot I'm putting it in, while there is a easy 12-15 inchs of soil depth from the current existing root size, the overall new potting on the walls of the pot is maybe around 2-3" of new soil space overall.

I do have a **larger pot** that is easily be at least 8-10 of space from the existing rootball diameter.

Much deeper as well. Am I fine with the smaller pot. Roots will just focus growing down even though they prefer - surface level- ?
