On a new thread or topic, we will come over & reply & you will be back where you are now. jolj(7b/8a) henry, I am going to try solarization on my bahia grass. 90% of the things on this thread will not eradicate bahia grass. This includes round up, which kills the tops, but not the deep roots. Round up will not kill nut sage/ nut grass or common dew berry vines. So I will try this on the bahia. I have heard that the solarization may kill the soil food web, when it kills the weeds. I am planning to sheet compost the beds after I kill the grass/ weeds. I have been told that tilling kills the soil food web. Not sure who is right or if it matters, I give vegetables away every season including the winter. I grow more then I can use, then I must be doing something right. Roundup and a whole bunch of other weed killers, including the supposed long term ones are not nearly as nasty as some think. I have a crushed granite driveway parking lot and last summer I put five different kinds of weed/grass killers on it to kill weeds. Not one single one came even close to killing all the weeds, including areas that were repeated ly resprayed. They can be annoying on a lawn when one gets careles and over-spray gives a temporary brown spot, but unless one uses agricultural/commercial grade spray, I believe they are over-rated. The only thing I ever used on the drive-way that lasted a full year was old gasoline that had become to much like varnish. As I wrote in another thread, IF you can get help and have access to a rental store. Rent a sod-cutter and cut the sod off and either haul it away or have them dig a pit deep enough so that a covering of dirt can be put over the stacked sod, even if three fourths are above grade, as it will turn into a dirt mound quite quickly.

Ken - I think I've got it now. What I'm looking for is -not- the RoundUp that comes pre-mixed in spray applicators at HD/Lowes/etc., but rather a concentrated form that I can put directly onto the cambian layer of the stump with a brush or bottle. Great idea about the ketchup/detergent bottle! Dibbit - I'll probably be using a lot of cardboard/newspaper in the areas where the ivy is currently running wild. I'd rather avoid plastic if possible. I've figured out that it is actually more effective to just get a good pair of gloves and pull the stuff up rather than going at it with a weed whacker or lawn mower. The soil underneath the ivy is the best soil on the entire property, I guess 20+ years of leaves falling from the trees and not getting raked will do that. Probably the same reason there are so many volunteer trees out there... rcnaylor - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that pulling rather than cutting will leave fewer repeat offenders to deal with. And I've already started scoping out sources for cardboard and mulch to bury the ones that do try to stick their heads back up. I'm lucky that the town actually runs a composting facility where homeowners can take all their yard waste and get as much compost and/or "wood chips" as they wish. Admittedly, the free stuff is not top quality, but I'll screen and use it rather than buy enough to cover 1/3 acre. Thanks again to all of you for the advice.

I'm inundated with those stupid moths too. Usually, every time I bring ANYTHING grain related home, I immediately put it in the freezer for 24 hrs to make sure any and all critters eggs are dead. (used to be just weevils, now it's those stupid moths) Most of those critters come in the food from the manufacturer. I too was on the austerity program and had to purchase food from the food bank. Usually, if I DO see any critters in a bag, I put it in the freezer before putting it in the trash. I went to open a box/inner bag of cereal and it was loaded with those nasty moths. I just threw the bag in the trash and I have regretted not putting it in the freezer ever since. They are an infestation now. I took everything out of my pantry and put it in the freezer THEN I threw them out. I put borax,which does kill them, all around my pantry left it closed for a few days then vacuumed the dead moths out & now the pantry is free of moths. I thought AWESOME!!! the fight is over or so I thought. Then I went into my coat closet and just happened to look up & there were about 20 of the cocoons in there. I took my broom and squashed & swept them all away. (BTW: I have one of those broom & dustpan kits where the broom fits into the dustpan & clips onto the handle. I put borax in the dustpan, so if the moths or cocoons are still alive after sweeping & squishing them, it will kill them, which it does). I was seeing baby moths flying all over. Since I saw the cocoons in the 1 closet, I decided to look in the ceiling of the rest of my closets. There were some in the linen closet. Then I went into the spare bedroom, to check the closet in there (which we keep the a/c vent partially closed and the lights off.) I almost had a heart attack. There must have been 100 of those cocoons hanging all around the edges of the ceiling and in the closet. There was no way I was going to be able to get all of them without dragging the ladder in & sweeping/squishing all of them. Well, I said all this to say: Is there anything I can just spray up there & kill all the moth cocoons before they hatch? I was thinking about using wasp spray, the stuff that shoots 20 feet. It says on the can that it also kills caterpillars. Which turn into butterflies. Moths are the devils version of butterflies. Butterflies are harmless and beautiful. Moths are ugly and very harmful. "Don't store up treasures here on earth where MOTHS and rust corrupts... Any comments?
