Fig Tree Branches Turning Black?
Comments (10)Yes, your tree is definitely dying (or might be completely dead at this point). It would have been better to allow your fig tree to remain dormant over the winter rather than try to keep it active and growing indoors. Here is what I would do now: Starting from the top of the tree prune all branches that are black. Continue working down the tree pruning all of the branches until you reach an area where the branches are still alive. You can tell if the branch is still alive by scratching the surface skin/bark with a fingernail.....if it is green beneath the scratch...that branch is still alive. Continue to remove all branches that are black/dead (i.e. all of those branches which do not have any green layer under the bark/skin layer). Even if all of the branches above the soil line appear dead and have to be removed, do not give up hope. It is still possible that a portion of the roots are still alive. After removing all of the dead branches, water your tree well. Take it "outdoors" ASAP and place it in a sunny area on the southern side of your house. Keep it close to a wall if possible. If any portion of your tree is still alive, it likely will send up shoots within a few weeks. Best of luck to you...........See MoreThe best shrubs to turn into 'trees'
Comments (24)I'm becoming a broken record on this one because I love this tree so much, but I gotta mention dwarf ponciana (aka pride of barbados) as a lovely little tree. Longer bloom season than the Royal ponciana, fast growing but doesn't get big. I bought mine four years ago at a charity plant sale for $3. It was a foot high. It's 15 feet now, and spreading nicely - actually throwing some shade. It did take some work the first year to control the shoots coming up, but once it realized I was serious about it being a tree, it acquiesced. I'm still trying to convince the golden dewdrop and a hibiscus that I am similarly serious. And the great advantage of a tree that is doing what I want without much work from me? Well, there's not much work for me. But I was also able to leave the dwarf ponciana alone enough this year that my cardinal pair found it worthy of a nest. I also see lots of different butterflies and even the occasional hummer. Lemme know if you want seeds. It will be awhile before they're trees....See MoreOrange tree leafs turning yellowish
Comments (3)Is your tree flowering? Flowering is the highest time of year for leaf fall. However, before the tree discards the older leaves the tree withdraws the nutrients from them to disperse through out the tree. By withdrawing the nutrients the leaves turn yellow and then drop....See MorePotted fir tree turning brown
Comments (4)thats actually not bad at all for what it went thru .. at least you didnt call it a pine tree ... and its not a fir .... id call it an arb... or some close derivation therein ... all things good.. the new growth should come out just fine.. yours is just showing the stress of what you put it thru .. and the fact that you probably couldnt harden it off properly when you bodily thru it out the door in january ... that must have been a shock to the living tissue.. and this is the result of that ... thats a very tall tree for the pot its in ... presuming its going to live on your balcony.. you are probably going to have to figure out how to stay upright when it gets windy ... ken btw: interior browning is cyclical and annual.. and increased by many factors like drought.. bad winter.. etc... it is common.. as the plant ages.. to have to go in there.. and roughly remove all the brown carp inside .. and what you are seeing is part of that.. just sped up due to the stresses mentioned above ......See MoreParks
