flowering crab suckers...?'s as rootstock
Comments (3)thanks guys, I don't believe this to be MM111. As I believe that has normal colored foliage. Given it's location I am sure it was not a feral seedling but a purchased tree. Which makes it seem likely that is was some type of seed grown crab for the rootstock. A quick search of the other cultivars mentioned (baccata, ranetka, ect...) again seems to show trees with more "normal" coloration of green. These leaves are slightly more heart shaped/pointed than most apple, very dark green base color with a noticeable red/maroon cast. I have seen this leaf type on other red and pink flowering crabs. It doesn't really matter of course. They are there and I will use them...just got me wondering....See MoreGinkgo Rootstock Suckers and growth of tree. (rather long)
Comments (5)Thanks hort, I really appreciate the feedback. If it is incompatibility, then the graft seems likely to eventually fail. I had a matte over around the base, with mulch on top to cut off all light to the rootstock hoping that would curtail suckering...... NOPE! Pulled it up yesterday, and there is a full ring around the base of pale white suckers from the RS looking for a way out to the light. I'm seriously considering allowing one of them to grow at this point and taking my chances on getting a female tree. Even if it turns out to be female, other than my two dwarfs, there are NO other Ginkgo ANYWHERE near, so pollination would not be likely. If I did this, I could leave the current graft in place and keep my female significant other counterpart happy, while something more satisfying came up. I know she likes it even though I'm not so happy. I also thought about trying to find a place for another one. On a side note, do you have an opinion as to which cultivar develops yellow fall color the earliest? I'm subject to early and late freezes in my location, and I'm thinking that an earlier turning selection (if I replace this one) might be a wise consideration. Thanks in advance, Arktrees...See Morequestion about suckers on a citrus tree
Comments (7)preppystud's question is a good one. I would also like to know what it is recommended for a tree that is not grafted (that grew from seed and it's just at the start of the maturity age): to let or to cut away new branches that grew from the lowest part of the trunk? That branches will start at very low node count, so there are few chances to fruit anytime soon, isn't? But also that branches are offering supplementary food for the roots, so in a way it will help the development of the tree....See MoreQuestion about grafting onto unconventional rootstocks...
Comments (46)I too am interested in grafting a "friendship" tree. I understand citrus overload, I was absent from this thread for a while because the bugs, leaf drop, etc. made me rethink how easy it is to grow citrus in pots up here. Now that it is under control and my citrus collection has been parred down to include only what I like, I am selective in my citrus choices. To that end I want to graft over my Cocktail grapefruit, I have harvested 4 this month and the flavour is not good. I am assuming it is the soil, light, and temperature conditions, but, there is no point in growing what doesn't do well. I looked at the compatibility chart jonmerr posted, my question is, it shows that grapefruit is compatible with mandarine as a rootstock, can mandarine be compatible as a graft on my grapefruit. Or am I tilting at windmills?...See Morejacqueline9CA
