This one is really tough because it is a hatchling and its pattern will undoubtedly change as it grows. If I had to guess based on these photos, I would probably go with one a hatchling of one of the species of the genus Tantilla although I can't say that it isn't a juvenile of a bunch of other things as well (Stenorrhina, Amastridium, etc).

crush the leaves and does it smell like Juniper because that's what those leaves look like.

Actually something I've seen in person...the 3:00 acorn looks more like a Gray Pine germinating. The pine nut husks at 11:30 & 1:00 confirmed it for me.

I would have guessed Opuntia cacanapa 'Ellisiana' for the cactus without reading the article. It is a very unique looking cactus, even for a prickly pear. It is spineless for most part, but can have some glochids. This varies though. One I saw in Tulsa had very few glochids. A very 'friendly' prickly pear and one I wouldn't mind messing with. The ground cover is more difficult to ID from this distance.
