I need some ideas to improve curb appeal - x-post kind of
Comments (47)Lovin what is happening with the thick posts. Adding a railing is also a very doable option. I particularly love how the posts thicken up at the bottom. Very grounding! And that's the thing with foundation planting - it really grounds the house. (I have to figure that out at my own house now that my house has new siding, doors, windows.) It's really fine that you don't know how to do that. GW has some great forums with folks who would be more than glad to help you figure out some low maintenance, substantial scrubs/plantings for around the foundation. You can also just look around your neighborhood/town at what people have done. Pay attention to their choice in shrubs and make sure you are seeing mature plants so you can figure out placement. It makes a TON of difference. And, for the second time in 5 minutes, I'm with pfmastin. I still really prefer the current paint color and brick. I like it light. It's really just such a good, fresh look! That being said, I know you were disappointed from the beginning with it and taste is taste. Would you consider just going with a creme with an undertone that takes you from the yellow if that is what is bothering you? Be careful with tans and beiges, or you can end up with a bandaid/pinky tone. IMHO, neutral and earthy, grayed out tones are good for the bones of a house. Punches of color can be added in porch furniture, front doors, plantings, pots, shutters, etc......See MoreIdeas to improve our curb appeal?
Comments (10)First, do no harm. Don’t add any unnecessary gee gaws. Simple is better. Clean up the landscaping after construction has taken place. Second would be a bath in a porch doesn’t sound like the best idea. Old enclosed porches aren’t built up to residential standards. The foundation may not be sufficient, and the insulation levels are likely to be virtually nonexistent. Comments (43)Flo, I like your sketch very much (although without knowing the basic sun/wind info I mentioned above, it may or may not be what she needs.) However, the suggestion of polished black Japanese river stones for a first time home owner in Oklahoma is probably not helpful.b You will drain her budget and she will find herself looking at dusty, not shiny, stones. If she likes your concept of creating a dry bed/ river effect (as I do), you or someone else might teach her how to do this with grasses native to her area. Ones that can be easily propagated by division, require no water or weeding, and will blow in her prairie breezes while attracting birds and wildlife. Can, I urge you to google images of landscapes by Oehme, Van Sweden. They are known for using sweeps of native plants, especially grasses. My suggestion to you is to play around with flexible hoses or ropes in dividing your wide open space to see what shapes please you. Then imagine the spaces filled with different color blocks of various heights. Which ones do you want moving, which ones static? Designing a three dimension landscape from scratch like yours can be overwhelming. Break it down into digestible parts. 1) Gather all information about your conditions. 2) Get out the hoses and ropes and draw on the ground like a canvas....See Moretrying to break up an expanse of lawn and improve curb appeal
Comments (14)what follows may indicate I jumped the gun assuming you were ready to talk about trees. Apologies but im not going to delete …. in my experience kousa dogwoods are not exceptionally slow growing and offer a variety of shapes snd flower forms. good to plant in lawn where dropped fruit wont annoy homeowner. ….so many possibilities to create your own mini arboretum!….. 1 please dont be in a hurry about this project. 2 get your soil tested 3 see whats planted around you but that will probably introduce as you said to more boring maples 4 Japanese Maples are not boring! 5 golden chain tree? 6. a ”heritage tree” to mark your familys time and hoped for future in house? 7 this will take time. it will be enormously rewarding 8 do you love this project enough to spend time making sure you check each newly planted tree’s soil every week and move hoses around as necessary .to ensure really deep watering.? Sorry in ground irrigation doesnt count. You cant soak a plants root ball with sprinklers 9 if you do begin to think trees visit the Tree Forum....See MoreRelated Professionals
