Can anyone ID this hosta?
Comments (12)Oh Ken, sigh...where does it read that you are barely to be tolerated? I don't feel like that, have not ever said so, so don't even go there. You are a good guy, a funny guy, a knowledgeable guy. I'm glad my comments returned you to this thread to explain to Hooray what you eluded to in your first post. Just so there is no misunderstanding I will explain the "approach" comment. You often drop a comment that is cryptic then don't return to that thread. That comment is left up in the air. There are those of us, particularly me, that pay attention to what you say (obviously) and it is unsatisfying when you make comments then leave them hanging, especially so when you are asked a follow-up question. Repeatedly you have ignored the follow-up. Granted, there are so many threads and posts to read, but if one is making comments one would check on follow up, right? Anyway, just to be clear, I'm not on a Ken bashing excursion. I really do enjoy your posts when you return to explain, which you did - this time. So, carry on by all means! I am glad you responded. :-) Perhaps this is a good time to alert you to a thread I will post shortly. I would like your input Ken and it might very well identify a NOID. It is regarding a hosta you once grew. Thanks. :-)...See MoreHosta Identification
Comments (7)Great suggestions. I didnt think about the flowers. They are "just" opening and seem to have light lavender color stripes on the outside. The flowers seem to individually rotate around the stalk in thirds. The stalk is unusually long, BTW, at least 2' tall. The Gold Drops and Piedmont Gold are in full bloom. One Sum&Substance bloomed yesterday. None of my others have bloomed yet, if that helps. The veins of the Lancifolia pictures I found seem more pronounced and I count 7 pairs of veins on this one. It might be Fortunei Hyacinthina. That one has the right number of veins and the color looks right. I couldn't find anything about the flowers, though. Clausa or Clausa Normalis is an interesting thought. The Normalis leaves seem more pointed than this one, but the flowers may give more info when they open (or stay closed). Fujibotan seems very close, but the unopened flowers are very much more purple than mine are and my leaves seem less shiny. That might just be the photography, of course. I thank everyone for the suggestions. The next couple of days will tell me if the flowers open or stay closed. The flowers being arranged by thirds and the timing of them may be the best deciding factor. I couldn't find much about the timing order of the flowers. I must say that just by asking this question, I have learned a lot about how to identify hostas! It never occurred to me before to count the number of veins, examine the rotation of flowers around the stem, or look at the bottoms of the leaves... So even if I never identify this hosta accurately, I've learned something. I can say that I certainly did not ever order any hosta of these suggested names, so at least I didn't mix up a label (relieved). And I haven't had any that grew as hybrids or sports (I have always planted them very spaced and there have been no "volunteers". But, if any of the additional information provides some new suggestions (or confirmations of earlier ones), please let me know! Otherwise, I'm going to have to make a plant marker label that just says "uncertain". I suspect that my source of hostas mislabeled a hosta (which definitely happened with a 3-tray of "Middle Ridge"). And since they have been so good over the years, I will not mention their name. ;) But if you have any further idea of the name of this hosta, I sure would like to hear the suggestion... Comments (14)Currant is a plant that as a landscape shrub has a limited use. As you've discovered, it's prone to some foliar problems, and there are a couple of insect issues that can arise. However, these are merely cosmetic blemishes, merely making the plant not look as great as you'd like it to. Something capable of outright killing this plant? while those problems do exist (as they do for just about anything alive), they are rare. When it comes to pruning currant, as a hedge, as they were planted before they were yours, they are quite forgiving. Also, these are established plants...so first, they are forgiving in nature when it comes to pruning (meaning, go ahead, do your worst...the only thing you have to lose is something you don't like), they are also plants that have an energy reserve in that root system. So yeah, go head, do your worst...uhm, best. You'll learn something, and you'll have done it yourself. The whole first year, second year, third year pruning thing is a little different than what you are looking to do. That's for size reduction but still keeping the plant is good shape. also, pruning for fruit production isn't really what you are looking to do. I commend you for doing some background in how to prune. Now I want you to forget it, don't worry about knowing everything before you do anything, and to in part, learn by doing. A little studying is good, a little practical experience is good...then after a little hands on, go back and read again...you'll see things with an entirely new understanding....See MoreCan anyone please help me identify this or tell me anything about it?
Comments (13)Nice, and really unique. You will just have to keep your eyes open for something that will work with that. Take the measurements down for what will work, you may get lucky and find something. The mirrors got separated on those vanities for hanging separately or just got broken. If you can find something maybe a simple round mirror with a black frame would work hanging on the wall above it. Before you try and strip and refinish check out re-amalgamation of varnish finishes. Google term or go to YouTube. Hint, if you can use this technique do it with a light hand if you want to retain patina. Also, don't remove patina from the drawer handles, just remove and give them a good scrub with soap and water. Here is one of many videos...I've used what is called mineral spirits, it's called whatever the guy uses in England, same stuff. Just check out YouTube videos. https://youtu.be/F9SsSF1Qv_Q Maybe not even use steel wool as this guy recommends. First try a gentle approach with a white cotton cloth dipped in mineral spirits. The process basically disolves the varnish, removes some, then the varnish re-hardens/drys. It happens rather quickly too. That is if it's natural varnish that was used, which is more likely than not. Doing a test spot will quickly tell you if it is varnish rather than polyurethane, basically nothing much will happen to finish if poly....See Moredjacob Z6a SE WI
