What do you clean your white vinyl porch railing with?
Comments (29)I have a vinyl pergola and it has vines on it all summer. When I take down the vines, I simply spray it down with 409. I let the 409 sit for a few minutes, then run a very soft brissel brush all over it. Then I hose it down. It is rare that I have to pay any special attention to a given area. I clean the outside vinyl on all of my windows the same way, about twice a year. I've been in my house for 32 years and that vinyl is looks new....See MoreColour of Railing in Front of House
Comments (3)I had replaced a rear wrap around deck and choose white rails due to the home trim being white . There was a balance. I have learned over the years that you need to take into account what is near and beyond the project. I am in the middle of a pool build and the husband wants white fencing whereas I say black cause the white will stand out and you see past the black.... a trick on the eyes. I am not a designer thus why I say take a photo of the home and draw in the silver rail & posts. Black will heat in the summer . Will it be hot to touch? At night will it be a safety issue since you can not see it at night? Will you cap the posts with lights? The home network recently aired a home redo in Decatur , Georgia where they painted the home black and installed a white railed two story porch. It looked fantastic. There was a balance.... Your stucco, door, window trim and walkway are silver/grey. The soffits are brown The fascia and roof are black. Could you post a photo ? You need to think about balance. At first I thought black too . I would do silver to blend in with the stucco and front door. Could you post a photo so others could chime in ? Think of this as a scottish plaid. A plaid has three to four colors and when you add the right balance it makes some colors stand out and others compete. You need to look at the color and percentages of color. As I composed this I have vacillated between the two colors. Most homes have three colors....... when designing a room you also have three colors in percentages. I think you should do the silver/grey rail and paint the front door a peach , orange , blue or even violet. Or you can add hard scape in that color. If you do black in front of the stucco grey your eye will stop at the black rail and not be fooled. I hope I am giving you ideas. could you do a photo? .........See MoreFront porch railing - need opinion
Comments (31)Virgil - It's not required by code. But our elevations have one drawn so the city won't bless off our house without one. So our options are: 1) Put in a permanent railing....wood, nice, traditional. City loves us and we move on. Will spend $$ on a nice railing. 2) Put in a temporary cheap railing. City loves us and when they leave, we take it down. Will spend some $ on a cheap railing which will ultimately be wasted when we take it down. 3) Resubmit the drawings without a railing. More $$ for basically pulling another permit. Plus dealing with the city again. But then we don't have to put up anything and can focus on another project. At this time, I don't know the cost differential between nice railing, cheap railing and the additional permit cost. So from a cost perspective, I can't factor that into my decision at the moment....See MoreSuggestions for front porch railing needed
Comments (10)I would replace the railings. Even if not needed by code, they add a finished look and railings are always welcome with more than two steps. Appreciated by any elderly or infirm visitors and adding to resale value. btw, the yew is one plant that cam be pruned back to the ground for a more manageable size. It will regrow but slowly and it is easy to keep up with an annual pruning to keep the plant in check. However, a heavily pruned back yew is not an overly attractive item and since this a highly visible entry planting, you might opt to remove or relocate....See MorePaul F.
