The major drawbacks of sliders are misalignment and roller wear. The lower weight bearing rollers often wear out relatively fast---sometimes as soon as three or four years with more than average use---opening/closing 5+ times a day. Adjustment is usually fairly simple, as long as the adjusting mechanism is not damaged/rusted/too dirty. And the adjusting mechanism and roller assembly is replaceable. The other gotcha is the amount of light/heat/cold the large expanse of glass transfers. A curtain has to be wall mounted and is cumbersome to open/close to operate the door. Double doors generally do not have any of those problems. The big gotcha with doubles are the room taken when open/operated.

I have a patio door with a single sidelight the same width as one of the patio doors. It looks like a 3 panel setup but only two of the doors open. I think they are 36" wide but would have to double check. So a bit wider that your existing opening. Looks similar to the door in the picture but i have two doors that open.

a few years ago I had Wonderful Windows come out and give me a quote. They said they would have to custom make my door. My slider is 9 ft X 8 ft. My house was built in 1978. The slider in our living area is in bad shape. There is another slider in the master bathroom (of all places) right next to the toilet. That one is smaller.

No mention of a wheelchair in your OP. They do have auto door openers for swing doors, too, but it wouldn't solve the screen issue. I hope you find a solution! The autoslide looks like a great option.
