Special kitchen touches

Recently finished redo of a very old kitchen.

will attach some photos, need ideas for a pop of color and ideas what to add to countertop.

I like the mullions in the glass-fronted cabinets, but the shelves do fight with them. Perhaps the shelves can be lined up with the mullions, and the items inside the cabinets arranged more intentionally, if possible. As for window treatments, I’d try going without unless they are needed for privacy or glare; show off the window trim and embrace a simpler look. As for rugs, I love the vinyl floorcloths offered by Spicher and Company. They offer a huge number of patterns and sizes at good prices, are water resistant and easy to clean, and lie completely flat- no tripping.

Well done! I think it’s great! Perhaps a larger runner or rug instead of the small dark mats. A bowl of fruit or vase of flowers, or one or three pretty ceramic pieces you find beautiful and that make your heart swell when you look at them. I prefer vintage to random home store finds, but that’s me. It may take a while to find the right things- do not rush it.

I would have done a fabric roman shade for color, colored small appliances but looks like you have already have stainless. Put some colored pieces in the glass door cabinets. Large pieces that show up. Change the rugs to ones with patterns of color

Tomorrow, gals who have pearls--faux or otherwise--wear the pearls. Or something equally classy. Get them out of the closet and on your body. Doesn't matter if you're wearing t-shirt or little black dress. Just don't apologize when questioned. Males, find a similar ironic M.O. and enjoy it. [I've clipped a few pearl strands together and strung them through my chandelier and pendants to celebrate the end of snow, a decor look copied from some high-end chandeliers currently for sale for prices I can't afford and I'll bet their pearls are fake. It's been a hoot since I did this--looks intentional and rather fabulous.] ___ Breezy -- Go walk some fabric stores and get your decorator hormones a-flowing. There's lots of special unique memorable stuff. ___ Recently I've found a number of sources for counter-height benches which might be helpful for some who are looking for a seating solution. Type in on search engine for examples. Breezy, there are also some very attractive benches for kitchen nooks, both tall and short. The glory of a bench is that it offers more long-term flexibility than built-in seating and can still be reuppholstered as needed if you get an upholstered bench. My father, although a carpenter who created many nook seating units for 50s kitchens, had a freedstanding bench in his own kitchen. Allowed him to push the table right over the seat of bench after the kids moved out. More flexible, less permanent. And in your kitchen the bench and table could be moved to a different position whe you need to allow a kitchen worker to work facing kitchen at island. Just be sure to include a toekick there. ___ O.T. BeckySharp, thanks for link to the plate hangers. These gizmos might be a godsend for someone with lighter pieces. I am afraid my stuff has more heft than these discs could hold. But...look at the large pewter pieces in the kitchen Boxer posted above. (Thanks, Boxer! Now find one for an 8-foot ceiling--there's a challenge!) These trays in photo are hefty babies and they're suspended with very large plate-holder style grasping hook apparatus. This is what I need to locate. Get this: My newest and most monstrous silverplate (a hunter's wife's revenge) piece is 2.5 ft by 1.5 feet and has a back made of a single board, a tray that may date from Queen Victoria's early reign (but then again, maybe not). Hefff-ty! I may have to just put it on top of new bookcase in custom groove and call it done. Unique and memorable perhaps but the specialness veers off into truly loony. This is not a decorating muse to follow, folks, it is a disease.

Hello, While I cannot directly answer any of your three questions abut the specific product, I just wanted to add my two cents' worth: I am inclined to agree with your husband about anything with "smart touch" technology. In my experience, ANY piece of equipment -- be it an appliance, fixture, car, machine, or gadget -- that has additional high-tech features will ultimately require more maintenance for those very same "smart" features. IMHO, if money is a consideration (as it almost always is) then buy the best medium to medium-high grade product with the least amount of additional features. I keep my utensils in a big beer stein from my college (my husband and I met in college). It's kind of tacky and got tucked away when my old home was on the market, but it's become tradition for us. ctycdm, I love your red knob, because I'm thinking of doing something similar with my BlueStar. Right now it has the standard black knobs, but I want to order a set of bright lime green knobs to pay homage to my childhood kitchen. My mom was a fantastic cook and never got around to updating the bright 70s era lime green formica counters in that kitchen before she died. When I think of her and that house, my mind immediately places us talking over coffee at the kitchen table. So I want my stove to be a little tribute to her that way.

Gray and white would not be a color scheme that most would classify as special - unless they were reading this ten years ago. For me, special would be a glossy, brightly colored European style kitchen in red or chartreuse. Even a black and white color scheme would be more exciting than gray and white.

I agree, I have not done the window treatments yet. (those are from my previous kitchen). I plan on getting just one fabric roman shade (under the cornice) and then it now goes into our den will match the large window in there with same roman shade and fabric. I have a lot to do. Haven't even began on attached den.

That would be nice! In the far left cabinet in your first pic (above TV) maybe just one item on each shelf for simplicity. It can be nice if most items behind the glass are kept simple, but I totally understand that’s not always possible.

I would get rid of the brown shade and go for a print. Pick your favorite color and use it there, add some glassware in the same color family throughout the cabinets and get a floor runner that isn't so dark. The dark shades are just depressing.

You went light and bright, don't gloom it up.

So you did an all white kitchen and now it looks a bit plain and boring. It’s pretty, but vanilla. I would add soft colors using dish towels, a rug, some art, the blinds. What colors are in the adjoining room? Soft blues, yellows and greens work well together.

Is it possible to remove the mullions from the glass cabinets? They seem to fight with the shelves inside. Then you can add your colorful dishware and cookbooks. Or, perhaps paint the backs of those cabinets!

IMO colored stools would have been nice but I think nothing looks better than a fresh bunch of flowers from the supermarket I buy yhem every week so affordable and that is all you need on the counters . Are the glass cabinets lit? I agree the muntins are overkill. BTW I never like rugs in kitchens IMO a tripping hazard but the new roman shade will give you another spot to add color.

As far as mullion I can change out the windows to a square or rectangular, but all the other windows in my front have the diamond mullion. Not sure what to do there either.
