Comments (8)As a reminder to all, it isn't always so much the pot size as it is the size and quality of the plant itself. I've seen nurseries stick one-gallon plants in a 5-gallon container and charge $50. For 3x3' hydrangeas, you can easily fit a mature plant into a 3-gallon. For me, cane count and cane height, along with about 2 years evidence of proper pruning to encourage branching is a good indicator of a healthy plant. I even laugh when I see a 3-gallon ES with 5 blooms on 10 canes going for $20. I am STRICT. In this regard, you are somewhat in best shape by waiting for nursery clearance sales on hydrangeas. It'll probably be worth it to get that 50" tall 7-gallon with 50 canes for 40% off than even a 3-gallon at full price.. And it's never more than a couple years until the newest entries in the market start showing up in larger sizes, although some we can understandably not wait for. :P I just got 15 (5x3) gallons of semi to mature plants for $130 with tax!
