I think you might have a keiki from a Dendrobium, not a phal. I could wrong though. I have only been growing for three years. Generally, you are supposed to remove the keiki from the main plant with sterile pruners or a sharp knife. For your keiki, this should where the top and the bottom canes meet. Then you would pot the keiki up in its own small pot (just big enough to hold the roots and keep the plant from falling over) with the media of your choice (bark mixed with sphag moss or what have you). I would like to hear what others think about the long root that has been growing in water. If it is put into bark now, will it die?

Most orchids produce the new growths from the base of the plant and sometimes they produce several new growths and eventually you end up with extra plants because the plant can be easily divided. Though the word keiki is a word for baby , it usually refers to babies not produced at the base of the plant. I suppose you should call your new plant a basal keiki and sometimes those babies produced at the top of the plant are more of a pain than a bonus. Bob, that helps a lot! You are right, those are exactly the type of Phals I am growing. I am keeping them warm and put the lights of earlier and gave them extra at night to see if that makes a difference. I am wondering, do you see the roots of yours growing, or do you have them in pots hoping they are all ok? I have considered the see thru plastic slitted pots. I am starting to question whether the roots of mines are still healthy and how will I know unless I yanked them out? I question my ability on these all the time not trusting what is going on that I can not see, if you know what I mean?3 Have you ever heard the the method of just sticking them in glass bowls with roots fully exposed with a mist here and there with the moisture being contained inside the bowl? Were you asking a question? Some Phalaenopsis will bloom year after year from new growths on a flowering stem. If, heaven forbid you wanted it judged by orchid Judges, the plant would not get good points for Habit and Arrangement of blooms. Doesn't matter, if you are happy, just let it do its thing.
