How should I hang my bedroom blackout curtains with unusual windows?

We will be moving into this space in a few weeks and I am excited to design our new bedroom. We will want blackout curtains in our room for functionality, but the windows are odd sizes and weirdly placed. I would really like to make the room aesthetic and I'm wondering what recommendations are out there for how to deal with this small little window in the middle of the wall?

Also, I would like to keep the space light so I've been thinking about white or off-white blackout curtains with a black rod, but I would love design suggestions as well!

I would run the rod along the entire wall and treat it like one big window. I choose white or off-white curtains in a lot of spaces. They tend to go with the millwork and look crisp.

If you don’t mind losing the middle window, could tape bristol board over it, to completely block the light and then add large art. Suggest just one lined drapery panel on each side.

Hi hcc1027- Cats are curious and will crawl through whatever window coverings you have. If you try to sleep late, they will awaken you, so no window coverings will completely solve that problem. You do realize that it is their house, and you are just the hooman they tolerate because you open the cans that contain their food, right? :) But back to the window covering issue. You can get "blackout" curtains which do not refer to their color, but to their ability to block out light. The curtains should be lined and have interlining, and be the correct size and be mounted appropriated. They should be double the width of the window. Most comments on here suggest accent walls are a thing of the past, but I think the exception would be on a wall behind the headboard. To do this I suggest moving the bed to in front of the window, then it won’t accentuate the sloped walls as it does in the current position. It’s also what you see when opening door so makes perfect accent wall. Then I would pick bedding and curtains, then wall colour using the fabrics as inspiration. An elegant and seem-less look would be to have accent wall colour match the curtain colour.

What did you end up doing? I have a similar problem with an arched window and sloped ceiling. Ideally I wanted a straight curtain rod across the top of the arch but because of the slope I thought it would look funny if drapes didn’t extending the typical 6” or so beyond the window. I’m considering a roller shade or woven shade to cover extending from the top as if it was one large rectangular window but I’m not 100% positive I even have the room for that with my slope. May have to go with two separate shades.....

I would have some custom work done. I would do floating walnut or teak wood bedside tables below each side window that goes to the edge of each windows casing. Then I would carry that same wood all the way across and up to the bottom casing on the center section to make a "headboard" if you will. This would all be made/installed to look like one piece. Then I would mount simple crisp white drapery panels on the outside of each window to add more texture. Last I would have some rattan lights hardwired to hang above each bedside table. This is a very rough mock up obviously but to give you an idea. Lights would match just showing options. and if you don't want to get into electrical then some more organic feeling lamnops You have great windows in that room and I would show them off. The panels would also go on the windows to the side of the bed.

Why black rods? Maybe decide on other elements in concert with that item if there is no need for the middle window (natural light, view, egress) then covering it with art would be the way to go.

We love a good challenge, and these windows are so unique and cool too! Not too sure what your budget is, but you can get custom-fitted blackout cellular (honeycomb) shades. They keep all windows visible where you can choose which ones you want to open/close. You'll want to get a 'blackout double cell' for the most light filtering, and it can be achieved with a white or off-white material color. They're also great for insulation and pretty stylish.

I think you could add valance at the top and make one big curtain covering all three windows, it would help create a unified look. In addition, blackout curtains of the same fabric and color can be used for the side windows, and blinds or other decorative panels can be used for the small middle window.

You know that you can buy black out cellular shades, right?

Any curtain that you use should be on a track so that you can open them. Curtains just on a rod do not really open. At least, they dont open and close easily enough to be really functional. The function is very limted unless you use the proper track systen and mount them so that they can stack on the wall, not the window.

By the time that you incur the expense of curtains and the right rods and the install and all of that, you just might be better served with some cellulars with blackout function. None of any of it comes cheap. It all has a price to it.
