Cordyline 'Torbay Dazzler' outdoors in zone 8

Grew this last summer outdoors in a container, then planted it in the ground in fall. It looked great until February when the terminal spike died, the rest of the plant still looked quite nice, and still does this spring, but does not have a viable terminal spike. It now has 18(!) buds growing in a ring all around the crown...this plant does not have a trunk. Anything I should do other than stand back and watch it grow? What will happen if all or most of the 18 buds grow at the same time? Should the "mother" plant be cut down at some point, or might it start to re-grow at the terminal?
