How did your new David Austin intros behave?
Comments (31)Vaporvac and Deborah, I purchased the GRF tour when they first started offering them about half the price as now. It was a fabulous tour that includes lunch and making your own bouquet of roses from what they have in their coldroom that day. So considering the price of a bouquet purchased online, the price is right and upped to reflect that. They are in the middle of making a new display garden that we didn’t go into, but it was at least and acre or two. They also have an AirB&B guest house that they were absolutely filling with bouquets of roses as they were getting ready for guest to arrive. A huge bouquet in each bedroom and two in the living room. The tour of the guest house had me swooning as it was filled with the scent of roses. It would be a lovely weekend getaway for any rose lover. Grace and Ryan were out of town that weekend, but their right hand man, Dan, gave the tour. All the staff there were the loveliest and sweetest people. It was a day to remember!...See MoreGriffin Buck Roses
Comments (84)Thanks, northland. I treat my Bucks about like I treat my Austins. I don't water them once established. I usually just feed them in spring and use a Tone product first. Rose Tone, Plant Tone, Holly Tone, Garden Tone I think it is, or even Citrus Tone. They're all pretty similar. You can use those pretty early as they're organic and take time to become available to plants. I used to scatter alfalfa around but have since found that alfalfa tea works better. I use that sometimes in spring. Then I put out some 10-10-10 once it warms up and right before a rain. I used to get truck loads of leaf compost every spring but no longer have a truck and might not be up for unloading a truck anymore. Sometimes I get horse manure at a stable. Some years I use time release Scotts rose fertilizer. I spray fungicide approx. every two weeks until it gets really hot. Sometimes in winter I spray dormant oil to reduce blackspot and kill mite or bug eggs. One thing I've worked on the past year is cutting down on shade by removing trees or limbing them up. Next thing I need to do is hire some help. You commented that you think our climates are similar but I think they are not. I accidentally wrote " zone 3 7" . I meant just zone 7. Sorry for the confusion. I'm in NC. I don't do anything for winter protection here....See MoreIs my DA Vanessa Bell in trouble?
Comments (2)Gotta' get that powdery mildew under control. Once accomplished, things should straighten out, bloom wise. A rose under stress (PM), does nothing right, poor flowering being chief among them. However, when it's super hot, in the 90's+, flowers, unless from a super cast iron blooming variety, hardly last 3 days. That's just the way it is during hot spells. Cool nights with hot dry days and little overhead rainfall favor powdery mildew conditions to pop up. Not every year will powdery mildew be an issue, but when it comes, it's mostly a spring or fall event, but can come any time conditions favor it, summertime, too. Please accept some criticism. Your container, very nice looking as it is, is too small for the long haul, IMHO. Consider an up size to a good 10 gal. or better pot if your future plans are to container grow your Vanessa Bell. If it's destined to be planted next year after winter storage, the pot's size is OK. For future container rose growing I suggest you use the best potting mix you can afford, making sure it is heavy in aged/composted pine bark, rather than heavy in peat moss which most potting mixes are. Peat moss breaks down, decomposes, much faster than pine bark. Too much in a potting mix, and PM dries it out more quickly, even shedding water, or it turns the mix into a gummy mess as it decomposes, rotting roots. When it's hot, watering frequently, more than you thought, is the rule, and mandatory. Over watering will immediately result in the bottom leaves on the canes to turn yellow and fall off. This is the surest sign of over watering. You can hardly over water a rose if the potting mix is a good one and drains well. The Bayer Advanced Disease Control for Roses.....will work well for the PM. Some rose gardeners like Spectricide Immunox better for PM, but I have no personal experience with it, having never used it. Never spray when its sunny or too hot, choose evening or early morning to spray. Never spray a rose that is wilting, or looking dry, dehydrated, from lack of enough watering. Comments (63)Wow! What's the saying...one person's rose trash is another person's rose treasure? ;-) My Fun In the Sun made me so happy this last year (in its first year) that I bought a second one 2 weeks ago! We do get good sun, not too much BS pressure, but I don't get the heat that much of So Cal gets...though we do get hairdryer winds sometimes (which makes us vulnerable to the fires). And we get the May Gray/June Gloom -- but my FitS never balled. And, Distant Drums is one of my healthiest, loveliest roses. And, I love my Moonlight in Paris!!! And my new discovery is Ruth Clements, which took my breath away with her loveliness (though, she's still very young, so can't say much about the mature bush). On the other hand, roses that are bullet-proof for so many (Julia Child, Zephirine Drouhin) -- were disasters in my garden... I try to avoid just putting my roses in the compost bin -- and pawn them off on neighbors! That way I don't feel as bad. But this year I bought my next-door neighbor a rose of his own so I wouldn't feel bad that he has a lot of puny roses because he's nursing my cast-offs! Eek. This year I gave him my cast-off Olivia Rose Austin -- perfectly healthy, just not happy with it. And, I'm giving him a Golden Celebration. I have two. One was a 4" pot from Annie's Annuals, and the other was a one gallon from Heirloom. They are about the same size now, but I don't need two, so he got the one from Annie's. The one I bought for him brand new was the Princesse. Any news/word on Teasing Georgia? This will be year 3 for that girl, and she's done almost nothing....See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W.
