closet system (top rail and hanging standards) and custom shelves

HI,
I have a non-standard nook and want to get a closet system (top rail, standards, brackets) but make my own plywood shelves that are just an inch or so wider than the ones that would go with the bracket. Problem is that brackets will need to go on the side so we'll be sliding things 'sideways,' or perpendicular to the brackets. I'm afraid the shelves will slide around. I really want brackets that let me attach shelves. Any tips?
Thank you
