Thanks for the advice. I am really intrigued by the Ikea storage systems that have been mentioned several times. We do have an Ikea 40 minutes from us, but I've never looked at closet systems. I'd love to have the builder install some kind of system, but money is getting tighter as we go, and I just decided I want wood floors. So I'm willing to put in the DIY time on whatever we can in order to save enough for the couple of splurges that we'd like to do. Anyone have pictures of their closets with the Ikea systems?

We did this very thing in our spare room to hold my sewing material and lots of odds and ends of stuff. We added the shelves on the side furthest from the hinges on the door for maximum access. The shelves are held in place by small wooden cleats with 2 screws in each and a couple of finishing nails into the wood shelf. If I ever want to turn it back into a full closet it's just a matter of unscrewing the cleats. We took down the shelf. left the rod there and put 1 shelf just above it on both ends. This holds blankets and bedding for that room on one side and special Christmas decorations on the other end. Then we added 4 more shelves. I would suggest you get your storage boxes first so you can custom fit the shelves. Our shelves are 15" deep by 24" long and I can put 4-- 10' by 15 by 6" inch high stackable clear boxes on each shelf. I suggest you get smaller boxes so they are easier to get in and out and clear so you can see what's in them. On the floor at the bottom I have a large tub that holds material. It works great for me and we can still use most of the rod for guests clothing and a few of ours

I finally understood what you mean. No, Elfa's top-rail-supported systems are wire or wire mesh with wooden shelves that serve as the wire drawer's support and as a dust cover. There are no all-wood drawer ones. I think they're just too heavy. You can look at the link below for wooden drawers. In some of their other photos it looks as if they MIGHT be rail hung, but I just doubt it. I guess the same principle as not hanging the kitchen cabinets all off a top rail. The weight for that closet system should be supported solely by the header track. Its important to screw it into wood. The vertical shelf supports have to be anchored to the wall so the shelves can be attached. I have pocket doors and i saw them as they were framed in so i have a bit of an idea how the inside looks. The header should have no problem being screwed into the wall OVER the door. There should be a header over the door, probably transitioning to 18“ on center studs to the right of the door. The difficulty will be with the vertical supports. In my situation, theres a cage made with what looked like 1x3s that the open doors slides into. You can screw the vertical supports into that wood but you must be careful with the size screw. Too long screws will go into the door. Im not sure how you would secure it if there isnt a ’stud’ available to screw into. You would need support for a hollow wall, like a drywall anchor. You would need something super shallow as to not interfere with the door. I suggest you plan this while the wall is open for the door installation. Take pictures and measurements to use when youre ready to hang your shelves. Maybe ask the door hanger for advice. Good luck.
