Summer Wine Ninebark -- ever just cut down and start over?

My SW ninebark is about 8 years old. It is leafing out now and I went at it just now -- cutting out a ton of dead branches. It was a lot of work....lots of dead branches and they are all criss-crossed. Just wondering at what point, if ever, you hack the whole bush down and let it start over fresh? I am sure I will lose a lot of the cascading effect this year when it blooms, but I can't stand looking at the dead...
