Ogon cones for mulch?

It isn't like they drop much viable seed so they have to be good for something. They seem like they won't retain much moisture and decay slowly. They're shaped for good airflow.
Most importantly, I forgot to buy proper mulch.

If it is organic, then it is mulch and can be placed some where. As fine as it looks, around plants or small trees. In the past I have used maple seeds for mulch, and in their proper place gum balls.

There is no real good reason why you could not use them, just as any other type of organic matter could be used for mulch. Left as they fall off the trees the cones would leave too much space, for light to reach the soil, to be effective as a "weed" control unless something else was added, but I have noticed that where pine cones are relatively thick slugs are less of a problem.

I just checked the info on the Greenwood nursery site from where I purchased the tree. They claim it was grown in a 3 gallon size pot to its 4-5 foot size, and they had reduced the soil around the rootball to make it less heavy for shipping. They also say it grows well in any wet soil, even to the point of them suggesting for customers to plant it by a stream. If the information they provide is correct then the spring rains should not be causing my tree any problems. Streams can often overflow much deeper than the amount of standing water I have seen, after our heavy rain fall events, around the planting area where my tree is planted. So what could be causing my currently 5' 5" tall single trunked tree to be so sluggish in its attempt to fully recover?

Interesting tale. I've been mail ordering plants for 25 years and I really feel like nursery standards have fallen in the past 5-7 years. How hard is it label a group of plants as one thing and not another? Some at least try to make up for it when they are caught making mistakes. But for example a nursery recently admitted to me that I got a fully dead plant, that the entire crop was a failure, but they are still touting it on their website, which I know they frequently update, 2 weeks later. It would not have been hard to know it was dead, I could tell the instant I took it out of the box. And this is someone with good Dave's garden feedback. No, I'm not going to say who. Ellen Hornig was the most straight-up nurseryperson I ever dealt with, and she's no longer in the biz.

Roger, I guess mine is ten or so foot tall. It was two or thee foot at transplant and looked like a branch sticking up its first year in the ground. Really as a fairly fresh graft that was what it was. After a year it figured out it wasnt a branch on a big tree any longer and lost that floppy look I think you are referring to. I think it has to do with bud orientation. Mine was staked for about two years but to keep it from blowing over rather than pull it upright. If you look to the far right of the pic you will see a planter on a tree stump. That was a big ash tree I cut down a couole years before planting the Ogon. My theory is its roots messed with the Ogon's root pattern. These grow so fast buying small is the way to go. Post some pics of yours when ya get it in!

why not.. the best mulch is FREE MULCH ...

it took about 20 year.. for the blue light to start flashing.. but i finally realized that peeps rake up all the freely created self mulch the plant makes.. only to then go buy bagged mulch.. dude.. wtf.... lol

why in the world would you rake up all the pine needles under a pine tree... then complain grass wont grow under the pine.. then go buy mulch to replace the pine needle mulch you bagged and threw away...

Looks like great mulch to me. Free is good. There are places I put fir cones which are larger. The texture is wonderful in the right spot.

If it don't have too much resin on it, why not? I regularly have pine cones in my pine straw. I got three big pines that drop enough for themselves and enough on the drive for one of my beds. I have bigger cones than the OP, I tend to toss them into the garden paths to crush down. If they had a lot of resin on them I wouldn't, because that can be sticky and not always so great to garden around. I've had the occasional sticky cones.
