Philodendron giganteum in zone 9b
Comments (8)The hybrid Anthuriums with the showy flowers (A. andraeanum types)are really variable in cold tolerance. Some will melt below 45F others have made it into the low 30's. Interestingly enough, one hybrid that seems more cold tolerant is 'Arizona'. There is a line of hybrids from the Netherlands named after US states and he have grown several of these. 'Nevada' also has grown well. We also got an Anthurium called 'Lazarz' from a south FL grower, its a large bird nest type. This will be it's 2nd winter outdoors. Another Anthurim we have grown for years outside is A. watermaliense, the Black Anthurium. It has been down to 27F with just some leaf burn though it is in a shady, wind-protected location so it probably a few degrees warmer. We have quite a few Anthuriums out for trial. We had some donated that were wild collected from Ecuador and Venezuela but unidendtified. These froze down after the 27F freeze but most grew back from the roots. Comments (14)Well, bad news today, Amazon is sold out of the Opalkas.. I will call Laurel later today and see if she has any. What I would do is do a search for "Tomato Plants for Sale, Bay are, or your city or a big city nearby. Why do I suggest that? Well I did a search for Tomato Plants "Orange County Calif". I didn't turn up any nursery that had the kind of maters I wanted, so I found Laurel and ordered them all from her. I had a dentist appointment Tuesday, and on the way home, I stopped at a local Nursery, (about 10 miles from Home). They had every mater I wanted, and nice size and price too!, GRRRRRR. I did not find that nursery when I did my search because it was in LA County!!!!! With Me, I want "Instant Gratification" with my maters, and had I done a better search, they would be in my garden now!!! I'm 70 and don't have the patience, time, or wish to take the chance on something going wrong trying to plant seeds, caring for them, light heat, water, etc, transplanting them a couple times, hardening off etc etc, so I always buy live plants. Hope you find your maters! Gary...See MoreFortuniana Rose, Zone 9b Florida, Never flowered
Comments (12)Fortuniana does not bloom for me if I prune it. I looked it up on the web and some sites say that wood has to be 3 to 4 years old to flower. This is a lot older than I thought but would explain why it would never flowered for a year or 2 following a pruning. I would think that if you have it draping over the fence and only prune it lightly throughout the year to keep it under control, then you will get blooms but it could take a year or two. I have grown it as a mounding bush, if I tried to control it, it would stop flowering, if I let it alone it would take over the garden. I removed it. I did take cuttings and have some in very neglected pots in the back of my mats and it bloomed this year. I am curious why you would want to grow fortuniana when in Florida we have other varieties that bloom year-round and pruning doesn't stop the blooming. Good luck with it...See MoreZone 9b unhappy Yucca: leaf curl, no growth. Advice pls.
Comments (21)Ok good to know, and in future I should be better able to navigate the site, so I won't be making these mistakes again. I hope! Thanks for understanding. I noticed this morning that there are little marks on some of the leaves, it's a new development. There's very small but have come on quickly. They're brownish in colour and from what I can tell from looking around online so far, it's probably some type of fungal infection. I have no idea how to treat it, or if it needs treating. Being that in the UK our regulations on fungicides etc are different than the US, and I wouldn't know how to figure out which treatment would be right, or even if treating it would be the best option at the moment. I need to start digging around! I'm also wondering if maybe the top needs something to protect it's trunk, it's always been like this. It came from a bigger Yucca that was chopped up. I'm going to post the new photos on the other thread, and link to that thread here too, once I have. I hope that's alright with everyone. Gosh, this poor plant has seen it all on my watch! Two black thumbs I have. Update: Here is the link to the photos and update on condition of the Yucca, in case anyone is interested: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/4694976/zone-9b-unhappy-yucca-leaf-curl-no-growth-advice-pls#20153636...See Morewestes Zone 9b California SF Bay
