Lighting Design Dilemma

Lamp shade advice.

I fell in love with this super heavy lamp at the Goodwill today and need advice on a shade. The shade needs to be more on the narrow side for the spot I will be putting it in. I'm also curious about the lamp itself if anyone know anything about it. I can't find any markings on it. Thank you :)

I agree with taking it to a local lighting store - if you don’t have one, there are lampshades sizing guides online that will help - you put in the measurements of the lamp and it gives you suggestions

You buy a shade with the lamp in hand and the shade must suit the LAMP..not the piece of furniture onto which you may force that lamp. You can alter the height of harp...... but the shade must be an appropriate width and height for the lamp.

Pick another spot for a nice lamp: ) after you get the right shade. Find a good dedicate lamp store near you: )

Cute lamp! I’ve bought several vintage lamps for cheap but then bought nice lampshades at my local lamp store. They can help you with sizing and style.

I took my antique capidomonte lamp to a lamp/shade store. The owner is an expert in that sort of thing. I was leaning towards a bigger shade, and she said you want the lamp to be the focus, not the shade. She helped me pick out a new finial as well. The old one is bakelite.

The glass and metal lamp shade is a huge part of the value of that style lamp -- and you don't want to just "toss" it. It likely would sell on line -- Facebook Marketplace or Craigs List or Ebay, etc. -- or even a yard sale. If you are not interested in doing that, then, at the very least, donate it to a Habitat for Humanity Restore Store or a charity run thrift store near you that supports a cause in which you believe. IF you want a lamp upgrade, buy a new lamp -- a tall thin metal or wood one with a medium to large white shade. You might even find one you like at Habitat for Humanity Restore Store if you go by to donate the one you have.

Jan is correct. The shade should fit the lamp because if it doesn't it looks stupid.

nothing special about the lamp itself probably from the 50-70s a conical shade will look really lanky and not do the lamp justice. if you want a bit smaller scale get a shorter harp. I would think a black and gold or shade would be nice this lamp has kind of a library feel.
