Thanks so much emmarene and laceyvail. We didn't have any control over the arbs, since they are the neighbors'. I'm starting to be convinced of establishing some "bones" in this garden space with a nice clumped red jewel crabapple, which would help obscure the view of the neighbors, be lovely all seasons --giving us some lovely red berries in December (Chicago-area), and the clump crab would offset the soldier look of the neigbors' arbs. Then, in front of the arbs, maybe a bit of a cottage garden feel, over time. Thoughts?

When you say 'black windows' what exactly do you mean? The entire frame or just the trim piece? I would be concerned that black windows will just fade into your mansard roof like your front door fades into the background now. I like what you have now,
