The extension does metal planters in Tucson with no problems, but they are much bigger (think livestock watering troughs.. because that's what they are). My own garden is metal (40x40" containers). No issues. We use ollas to irrigate. But back to the main question: star jasmine is also messy. I had a massive one. And holly cow do they smell good, if you can keep them alive, but they drop a lot of leaves per year. I can't think of a vine I'd be willing to grow so close to my pool. Have you considered a long planter of fence post cacti (or similar) instead? (ETA: They might not be so plump looking on a southern wall, but I have successfully grown them in shade before.)

the problem with vines in the compost pile is the woody vine itself .. if it becomes so .... the suggested ID is the grape family ... and they are the worst .. they take usually take forever to break down ... and make turning the pile near impossible.. unless you really like cussing while you do so ... which in itself can be therapeutic .. lol ... when i took down some large grape plants.. i made dozens of xmas wreaths out of them.. just by winding them up ... i gave them away to everyone who walked in the yard.. lol .. now that recycling ... lol https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=grape+vine+wreaths&iax=videos&ia=videos ken

Thank you to Carol23-gw for your response. I checked kiwi photos and they matched! Now to figure out if it is male or female and try to get its mate!
