I love green- Can you have too many rooms painted green
Comments (32)Okay, now here is a slight hijack for all of you lovers of green. Being a "green person" I painted my kitchen BM Saybrook Sage several years ago. I love it and so does DH (he said he was surprised at how much he likes it). I painted the cabinets a creamy white (BM Lily of the Valley) and like that with the green. Problem is that we have two and sometimes three large long-haired dogs who sometimes get past us when they are wet and shake. We also have 60-something eyes that often miss drips or dirt on the cabinets unless I put on my glasses and look carefully. DH doesn't even bother to look! Now, I am not saying I won't be cleaning, but I do want to avoid that moment of horror that I occasionally get if someone drops by and then I notice drips or something after they go and wonder what they thought if they noticed the mess. So, does anyone have any ideas of a shade I could paint the lower cabinets that would work with the sage and with the upper cabinets which will stay white (dark kitchen when lights aren't on during the day). Thanks and feel free to ignore me if you think I should start a new thread. Just seemed that with all of us loving green, this would be a good time!...See MorePaint - the perfect light neutral gray taupe or cream color HELP
Comments (20)Hi - We just painted our entire first floor in Farrow & Ball "old white", which is a taupe-y grey. In some light, it also has a very slight hint of sagey green, but not so much that you'd think it's a green color. It definitely looks more taupe-y than anything else, and we've gotten lots of "oohs and aaahs" over it, even from the subs. We have dark wood floors and white trim and baseboards (which is done in F&B "Pointing" as are our ceilings). In the office and master bedroom, we used F&B "light grey", which is also a wonderful color but definitely darker and may not feel light enough for the main areas in your home, depending on what your natural light is like (and obviously, depending on your taste for dark vs. light). Farrow & Ball has such wonderful big hand-painted swatch cards, and I would highly recommend purchasing them...they're a hefty $50, but definitely worth it and WAY better than the little brochure they'll send you for free, which has tiny little bits of color that give you just enough of a feel to want to see more! If you're interested, I can take photos of these rooms, but we're moving in on Friday (after an 8-month whole house renovation), and we're in the throes of last-minute chaos with electricians hanging fixtures, painters doing touch-ups and punch list stuff. Our contractor put rosin paper down on the floors so they won't get messed up, and so the tone of the red rosin paper may influence what you'll see as the color of the walls. Here's a tip for you - if you go to Google and press the tab for "Images" and type in the name of the paint that you're considering using, you'll probably see photos of rooms from magazines that used that color. It's very helpful. When we were considering using F&B's "Middleton Pink" for my teenage daughter's room, we were worried that it would be too little girl-ish, but when she saw the image of several rooms painted in Middleton Pink, she liked it and so we went with it (unfortunately, later on, after it was on the walls, I made the mistake of mentioning that it wasn't a very sophisticated color. DUH! WRONG thing to say to a teenager). Anyway, Google Images was very helpful! Good luck with your search. I went through the identical struggle on the neutral grey taupe about six months ago so I know how difficult it can be! Susan...See MoreGray paint to go with shades of old gold and navy?
Comments (7)If I were you, I would wait to get some of the bedding and furniture before selecting paint color. A neutral might not be the best choice especially if you are drawn to darker tones. BM Van Deusen Blue is great color, but if you are going to do a dark blue duvet or comforter, then you might not want more blue. So, these elements all have to play well together. Loads of neutrals out there. If you just want neutral pick anyone of the warm grays. But a great chandelier against that neutral wall color won't be as dramatic as if the wall was a deeper color. So, think through everything before you choose a wall color. Do some sample boards of a variety of colors and see what works best with your chandelier and bedding. Those are your main features....See MoreHow do I steer my husband away from cream colored cabinets?
Comments (125)I'm glad you're finding things you like, Lauren Confair. And as critical as layout is (the thing that pushed me over the edge into ripping out our old kitchen was that we couldn't open the pull-out trash and the dishwasher at the same time, because they were on adjoining ends of a corner), don't let anyone admonish you not to think about color or style yet, because when you're researching contractors and writing big checks and emptying out storage and living through weeks of dust and noise and inconvenience, it's not the thought of a handy prep space and sensible work triangle that will pull you through, it's the vision of soaring cabinets, shiny new countertops, and a gorgeous result. BOTH are important....See MoreRelated Professionals
