Garden plants that ground squirrels will not devour?

I used to have a garden full of antique roses and companion plants, but beginning at around 2018 the ground squirrels began to dine on them and after a few years everything was gone. The coyotes thinned their population recently and I thought I might try roses again, but no luck there.

I've now planted some ceanothus (California lilacs) and mimulus (monkey flowers) and so far these plants have been left alone. I wonder if you might have some suggestions of other plants that will escape being ground squirrel food. I live in northeastern San Diego County at 1700 feet and the soil is decomposed granite. Unfortunately I don't care for caci and succulents so that does limit options. Any suggestions would be welcome.
