Based upon the limited information, I would have a single door entrance to the bathroom from the bedroom, Enter the closet from the bedroom, reduce the size of the shower, not locate the toilet in its own tiny little room, and swing the shower door into the shower. See concept sketch.

You will need your local glass shop to look at this. I’m guessing you will be shocked at the price to do what you are proposing. Marks sketch works if the shower wall opposite the toilet is framed out and tiled so it’s structurally supportive for the door (I think that’s what he intended by the way he sketched it). If you went this route you could locate the shower controls on this said wall for ease of use at the entry to the shower. If you can’t change the access point to the closet I’d strongly suggest a pocket door, no door or a saloon door to the toilet for safety (no in swing door to a tight confined space - someone would be trapped in there if they passed out on the floor).

IMO a 4ft x 5ft toilet room is no more suseptable to someone collapsing and blocking the door than any other door in the house. And, in this case, a door wouldn't need to open very far for someone to get inside the room.

Studies have shown that "the rarity [1%)] of long-term survival among individuals sustaining cardiac arrest in the toilet [i.e. bathroom] is due to the delay in discovering the individual who collapsed." So, any private space that is separated from the more active spaces in a house can pose a higher risk.

And if you are building new and can plan for the rare event why wouldn’t you?

I do not like cleaning glass in a shower.

I also don't like cleaning glass in a shower.  My preference is to make all the walls regular tiled walls, then include a couple of glass windows up higher (roughly 7' header height with a 2' tall glass pane) to let in some light.

11K of thicker 1/2" custom glass, with support rods to the ceiling is what that design demands. Glass has just about doubled in price over the last 3 years.

We’re doing a frameless enclosure.

First, what's your motivation in building such a large shower? As another poster said, it'll be expensive to do a frameless shower this large (you're talking glass, but the tile is going to hit you hard too), and it's going to be a lot of glass to keep clean.

I think I see two plain shower heads in the lower left ... if you're going to stand in that small corner to shower, why all that other space?

Instead of two plain shower heads, I'd go with at least one handheld on an adjustable rail.

With all this openness, consider where you're going to store your toiletries. Note that all the lovely showers in magazines, etc. don't showcase a clutter of the various products you use in your shower ... but, in real life, you're going to need to put those things somewhere. With no pony wall to hide your stuff, it's going to be out in the open.

Finally, where are you going to hang your towels? I don't see an obvious place just outside the shower.

I agree with Mark: go with a single door. Double doors are problematic because you can't open them with one hand, and they make light switch placement problematic ... and it's a weird "ta da" moment to open double doors and walk into a bathroom. If you want something fancy, consider going with a single French door with a pretty curtain.

Good point ... you definitely want to be able to reach into the shower and turn on the water without exposing yourself to the stream of water.

Well, we can't possibly build everything that'd be good for this or that potential issue ... but, in this case, we're talking about choosing one door over the other ... that's not really more money or effort. And the obvious choice ... the cheapest, the easiest to keep clean, the most accessible in an emergency is no toilet closet.

And if you have vinyl windows and can specify the glass as frosted, you could switch the tub and shower locations and really open up the room architecturally (and have an easier time cleaning around the tub and opening the windows on a nice day)…..

Here are a variety of different large shower stalls. IMO you want a door that swings in both directions and is wide enough to accommodate someone with disabilities.

Personally I wouldn't spend all the money on this and not have a seat in the shower. You get old, you get tired. Sometimes you're too tired to stand in the shower. It happens.

Consider the second to last phot that Beverly posted as it will still make the space feel open, will give you a way to do a seat (which is a good idea) and to help reduce the cost of the glass. When you budget any of these ideas you will be shocked at the cost of glass.

Using the Dulles Glass shower door calculator with a swing door, you could have, for example, a 24" door + 54" fixed glass, or a 30" door + 48" fixed glass, each for a total width of 78" ( = 6-1/2'). Maximum total width is a whopping 136"!
