Ideas For Kitchen Space

We are stumped on what to put in this corner. We had a table but we never used it. Could use more storage/displays/ prep space etc. Any images or interesting layouts would be appreciated.

Hmm....still need more...what are you looking for? An eat-in area? Extend the kitchen cabinets/counters? I suggest you read the "Read Me" thread (liked below). I think it definitely would add value to your house because the next owner wouldn't have to go through what your going through now. I think you're right that people want more usable, functional space. Too many people think they want totally open spaces but they end up with what you have now with wasted and useless space. and in furnishing those purposeless areas, they end up with something that looks like a furniture store showroom. Boring! I agree with squaring it off and placing the French doors facing the foyer. An added benefit when finished, is you gain some wall space in your living room for a wide but not too deep statement cabinet that could hold a lot of the kids' toys and games. If you have frequent guests and need an extra bed, I like the idea of a fold-up couch or desk/bed set-up to give the room an extra function.

I don’t know if you ever finished your kitchen, but in case you did not, and in case others come across this thread, I thought I would tell what we did. We remodeled our kitchen using a 24 year-old high end kitchen from a kitchen charity reseller (Green Demolitions). It had a huge island that I could fit into our space if we did not have a kitchen table. I have lifelong knee problems and could hardly rise off a regular chair height, so moving to 24” kitchen stools sounded like a solution. We went with the island, with space for four to comfortably sit. It turns out that my knees don’t much like sitting on stools, either. We are a family of two and take our meals in our recliners, anyhow. The issue became how to have people over and sit comfortably. Then I discovered convertible furniture of Italian design! They make coffee tables that rise up on scissor legs to dining height with tops that swivel 90 degrees and open like a book, doubling their size. There are other designs as well, all creating full size dining tables. We found a leather sofa at Macy’s that has a seat height of 20” and we keep our old dining chairs in the basement to bring out when people visit. Our family room is now easily and quickly converted to a dining room with banquette seating. Here is where I got our table. Thanks for your advice, Patricia! I will definitely take your thoughts into consideration. The drawing is a basic layout of the space as is right now but I understand you're looking for more detail and photos. (I have photos but the post only allowed me to upload one image. I will try to add more.) Regarding the island, I'd like to combine the current kitchen and dining space into one large space and have an island right in the middle, so the island would occupy a larger space. I hope I'm describing that idea a little better. Ideally my husband and I would like to do as much of the work as possible and utilize secondhand materials to reduce waste and cost. We will be replacing the laminate in the kitchen with hardwood, which we have already done in another part of the house. We're happy to do the work and take our time. Thank you again for your input! There is certainly a lot to think about.

We have a traditional style, with moody saturated colors throughout the house. Updated the cosmetics in kitchen, eventual full hardwoods (this is vinyl for now). The dining room is large and right next to kitchen and we use it so we really don't need any eating space in the kitchen itself.

I'd consider a corner cabinet, in a color that works with one from an adjacent room. You can find them in antique and second hand stores ( I have one that belonged to my husband's grandmother) or lots of options new.

Add some pretty plates on the surrounding walls or maybe a gallery wall including photos of your pets.

Looks like prep and storage would be really beneficial and there are all kinds of kitchen carts at very reasonable prices. Measure the space and suggest getting the largest to fill in the corner, but also be the most useful (black would be complementary). A low unit also won’t overwhelm corner and with art above, it will feel well balanced and inviting.

Suggest adding a vinyl or washable runner by sink to pull everything together.

That wall can be a fabulous storage area. I like the posted option from @barncatz because of the color and the style. Your kitchen is homey and funky and fun. That piece matches the feel.

Or, you can do upper and lower cabinets so you have countertop space for prepping. That would be the most expensive idea.

A moveable cart plus one pantry-like unit would fulfill both needs. But keep the storage part in line with your adorable cabinets. Both sides of the kitchen need to feel the same.

I would remove the over the range microwave, have a simple white hood installed and get a cart or stand for a microwave in the corner. Possibly one that includes a trash bin.
