PTO rotation what stops it?

I have a 917.273240 25hp Kohler.
I am replacing the PTO and I dont see anything to line up the PTO to keep it from spinning when engaged and tearing the wires out.
It has been working great but all of a sudden the PTO spun when engaged and broke the wires.
I looked at the parts diagram in the manual and didnt see anything.
Any suggestions?

If this is an electric PTO clutch there should be a bar that keeps the outside of the clutch assembly from spinning Thus the inside of the clutch spins when electrically engaged and the pulley will spin on the bearings. The wire that engages the clutch runs along that bar.

Hope you can repair the wires. And hopefully you won't have to take clutch out to do so

Hey folks, so I'm posting this follow up in my original thread because I think I have a related problem. Last year, I replaced the PTO drive belt and the mower blade drive belts on my inherited JD STX 38 Yellow Deck. Today I took the mower out (NOT the first time this season) and had some serious issues. First of all, the grass is tall - 18-24 inches. I had the mower height set to the tallest height. The grass may have also been slightly damp - although not wet. I was able to cut basically one path, then I realized that although the PTO was engaged, the blades weren't cutting the grass. I was going at the slowest speed (first gear) and even tried cutting using only 1/2 of the mower deck width at a time - no help. I took the mower back to my driveway, cleared out lots of old clumped grass from the blades, and started the mower and the PTO. The blades were definitely turning. I turned off the mower again, and noticed that the PTO drive belt is looking terrible - it's all pitted and slack - it's not tight around the PTO shaft! So, my theory is this: the PTO drive belt is shot again (Although not broken yet) - so the blade spin when I'm not trying to cut anything, but when I come in contact with any sort of grass of substance, the slack belt is "slipping" and resulting in the blades not cutting? Does this make sense? Solution: replace the belt AGAIN???? A few more things to note: 1) I tried cutting shorter grass and drier grass and had very little luck. 2) why would my PTO drive belt, just replaced a year ago, be so shredded already? That's worrisome... any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

Karrie Ann, Your clutch definitely works great but will it work great indefinitely? It is not the verbiage... torquing or tightening. It is the procedure of tightening of the bolt to either a random, and usually insufficient, degree as you did versus the tightening of the bolt to a specific tightness (torque) as the service manual and manufacturer instructs to prevent it from loosening under load. You can not do that unless the PTO assembly is LOCKED and you have a torque wrench, torque sticks, or other specific device (tool) to indicate the torque applied when tightening. Holding one ratchet in one hand while tightening the other ratchet with the other hand will not get you remotely close to the 100 ft/lbs that some manufacturers spec for a PTO bolt. Experienced people know that and we see people posting that their PTO fell off and we know why. You don't need a mechanic's thesaurus you need a dictionary and to show some respect to those trying to help you rather than consider constructive criticism a personal attack. Don't be so emotional ma'am. You're so intent at bitching and admit you're not a mechanic so simply say thank you when people take their time try to educate you in the hope of saving you from yourself and an expensive repair.

The part number for the locator strap is GX22213BLE . It is not unusual for the bearings to fail on the clutch and spin the clutch. My guess is if the old locator isn't loose and appears that the clutch may have damaged it that you need a new clutch.

I'm Assuming the 917 number is the model number of of a Sears tractor. The clutch wouldn't be a part of the engine. I thimpk! I googled: "917.273240 25hp Craftsman mower Parts manual" and got this{ Sears page.
1. There's a whole bunch of different anti rotation bars and some other stuff. Some of the prices for the clutch are about 4 times what I paid for a new clutch last summer with the labor. BUT if you look at that page about half way down the page to the first bar is 3 links: Parts Models or DIY Content. If you click on Models it allows you to choose an online Parts Manual.
3. The manual is at this page. Either put in the part name: "anti rotation bar" or click on Mower deck to view the deck parts. I didn't go this far.
5. I've saved some of the pages for my machine on my computer for future reference. I didn't add in the numbers in this post???

I have the factory manual that lists all the parts for the mower including all engine parts. I have gone through the manual a number of times and I cant find anything that says "anti rotation "

It shows the PTO and the part number. I was just wondering if someone ut there knowknows something

I came up with the same part number for Anti-Rotation Bracket. But I'm not sure and they don't take returns.

Since you seem to indicate that your bracket was lost I'd assume you also need some kind of retainer to keep the bracket in the machine. But you can find cotter pins at a local hardware store.

You can find some parts for mowers at third party sellers like Stens much cheaper.
