Need a Bulllet-Proof way to Propagate Cuttings from NOID Rose
Comments (23)Yes, I forgot to mention that the water here is neutral to slightly acidic, and soft with low TDS. And humidity is high. Thank you, Kim, for adding the info. I'd like to add, about the issue of humidity. Besides misting or covering, perhaps having shorter cuttings put in tall cups might also help if the humidity in your area is not enough. Pictured below, I've tried taking very short cuttings (two leafy nodes) and placing them in 7-inch tall transparent cups. There's a hole drilled an inch from the bottom of each cup for overflow of excess water. I put this batch under full sun, with much success (in December, when the weather is nice and cool in Taiwan, any other time the cuttings would be fried under the subtropical full sun here I guess). As everyone says, hope you'll try different methods and good luck! :-) Hardy...See MoreSaferoom bullet-resistant panels are $--any additional options?
Comments (47)I was a circuit judge for 18 years and have been an NRA Certified Small Arms Instructor and Specialist in Home Security. One thing to remember is that while crime is general may be going down, violent crime targeting those with money (meaning anyone who pays taxes) is going up. I have tried defendants who have invaded home and beat the heads of the homeowner's in with a hammer, tortured then shot Holocaust survivors, tortured sexually then murdered the homeowner. I could go on and on. From reading the comments I have a few observations 1. The police have no legal obligation to protect you. You first responsibility if you head the head of the house is to do that. It come before the vacation, the new car, everything else. 2. First, keep all your doors and windows locked. I tried a rapist who raped 75 women and in every case he entered through an unlocked door or window. 3. Front door and back door are prime entry point. Replace all the screws in the hinges with 3.5" or 4" screws. You probably have 2 inch now. If you have a door with any glass in it get rid of it and get a solid door (a steel one in the back). If you have "side lights' the small windows next to the front door, change them out with Lexan or something stronger than glass that can't be seen through. 4. For less than $250 you can get a camera system (without a dvd recorder or monitor). Place one camera outside covering every door. Any time there is a knock on the door go to your television (where you have wired the cameras into the "aux input) and don't take one step towards the door unless you can positively I.D. who it is. For $750 of less you can buy a set up with 4 cameras, a dvd that records for 2 weeks and a monitor. Always buy a wired system, the wireless are tempting but everything interferes with them. 5, My house has plaster walls. They are bullet resistant at least up to a 5.56 NATO M855 round fired from a Cold AR-15 with a 20 inch barrel from 10 feet away. The bullet (for non gun people the head or tip of the cartridge that is usually pointed and which rapidly comes out of the barrel of a rifle or pistol). I found the bullet fairly intact in between the two plaster walls (plaster usually is applied to wiring and or thin strips of wood then there are 2 x 4's the another plaster layer. The bullet was in between the plaster walls. The reason for the 5.56 NATO M855 in 62 gr. while legally is not "armor piercing" is often referred to in the military as "light armor piercing" but I wanted a good FMJ as opposed to an anti--personnel round like a Hornady .223 V-Max in 55 gr. They have a plastic tip designed to penetrate less and do more damage to humans and animals. While this is all interesting, I used the information to finish up mt safe room, the master bed room. I changed the door out the a 16 gauge steel door with steel frame then bolted on 1/4 inch AR500 (475 brinell steel). On the door, I had two deadbolts installed, one, two feet above the door knob and one two feet under. Finally, I used two pull handles like you would have on a barn. On the inside of your safe room screw those in to the first stud that is not connected with the door using 3.5" screws. Then measure it but you usually have room to slide a 1.5" or 2.0" steel pipe through the pull handles. When your family gets in the safe room you lock the deadbolts and slide the pipe through the pull handles. That makes a barricade. Then call 911. If you have a fireare if anyone come to the door tell them that you will shoot them if they try to enter. If the voice claims thst they are the police demand they slide their I.D. under the door (while standing to the side) and call 911 and ask the names of the responding officers. 6, If You want to save money you can but a hollow steel door for $150 and fill it with sand, but use 4 hinges. Bullet proof glass is expensive.. You can omit that and keep the curtains closed. 7. Someone commented about a single phone book stopping, I am not sure what kind of round. In my test. the M855 5.56 penetrated two, 4 inch thick phone books when fired from the AR-15 described, then went into the ground several inches. Do your own test. This site does test like this using books and phone books, they did not test the M855 (I could have told them that the 193 would not penetrate as far as it is much better "people killer" breaking up in the body. In their test, 9mm FMJ penetrated 7 inches. http://www.theboxotruth.com/the-box-o-truth-31-the-books-o-truth/ 8. For those of you who have a moral issue with killing in self defense, especially with firearms, I submit do not call 911 because all you are doing is putting a young police officer's life in danger when you won't even defend it. I think that is immoral to ask someone who make one half what you do come to your house and kill for you. If you think killing is wrong, fine, sit there and let yourself and your family be killed. If it is wrong (which it is not) then it is wrong for you to engage someone else to do it for you. This is an excellent article which discusses this subject: http://ashbrook.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/2008-Spelman.pdf 9. I thing a hone alarm is essential. It give you a few seconds if there is a break in to wake up and it will deter burglars when you are not home. But you have to use it all the time. A lot of shady people are in the "home security business" watch out. Don't sign a long term contract. Talk to people who have had alarms for 10 or 20 years and find out who they used. These "people" that commit "home invasions" robberies and other offenses against good citizens like yourselves are on another wavelength. You can't bargain with them, buy them off, plead with them. They only respect force. Don't be lulled into a sense of complacency. Just because you have never had a break in does mean you are not next. I have kept the discussion away from guns for a reason. If you are not going to spend at least 25 hours training with somebody decent and then spend a few hours every quarter, don't bother. You need to do that to keep your. skills up. But if you want a gun for that safe room in case all else does wrong, don't get a pump shotgun and think racking it will scare off the criminal. All you are doing is saying "I am in here with an unloaded gun". Get one of Kahr's new M1 carbines, a 9mm Beretta Storm, or one of several 9mm AR-15's. They are all easy to use, zero recoil and for $75 you can spend some time with an instructor learning how to use it. Out on the street use the Mace Pepper Spray Gun. Shoots 20 feet, has 10 shots and carry it in a holster like a gun. Cops hate pepper spray because they have to arrest the person they have sprayed, you don't have to....See MoreLooking for recommendations on a Bullet Proof Floor Grout
Comments (2)Fear not....I've used it extensively for shower floors and love it. There are YouTube videos on it's use. Never needs sealing, holds it's color quite well, no mixing, easy to use and any extra will keep for about three years. Easy clean-up, but only do about two or three sq. ft. sections at a time as it "kicks" pretty quickly. Use a good sponge and squeeze as much water out as you can. The only downside is that they recommend not getting the floor wet for 7 days....See MoreBullet Proof Rose For Fence
Comments (27)I've also read great things about 'Red Cascade', and have it on my list -- only problem is that I don't know where I'd use it, and so it remains on my list and not in my garden. If you're willing to forego fragrance, it might be a winner for you. I do also want to return to something I mentioned previously -- consider looking at some of the once-blooming ramblers for this fence, with some Type 3 Clematis to provide color after the rose has finished. If you want fragrance, there are some Autumn-blooming Clematis among the Type-3s that can provide that. You may want to steer clear of "Sweet Autumn Clematis", however, since it is known for seeding about like a weed. But in any case, having several climbers with different bloom times would provide longer interest. Brushwood Nursery has a very nice selection of climbers, and not just Clematis -- also Honeysuckle, Roses, Passiflora, Jasmine, etc. If you search their website, be sure to click on the "show out of stock items" to see all of what they carry. You may like the fragrant late-blooming small-flowered Clematis, such as 'Triternata Rubromarginata'. I got quite a few Clematis from them last year, and they're all doing well. :-) ~Christopher...See MoreDBV DBV
