Seedling murder (first of many)

I became convinced that the robust clump of 'penstemons' must be seedlings of the much weedier campanula persicifolia. I pricked out half a dozen of the nicest and tossed the rest...however, I am now belatedly examining an actual c.persicifolia and coming to the conclusion that I have made a dreadful mistake...

Berating myself for photo fails as the Name That Plant forum would have put me right in an instant.

Every year, I have label fails - missing, swapped, illegible. O, I will remember them when they get their true leaves (I often don't).

I was literally on my hands and knees yesterday combing through a clump of something trying to decide what it was that was coming up. I'm pretty sure that I have carefully weeded and mulched around what is nothing more than a weed just to be on the safe side.

I do my weeding with a scuffle hoe type thing and crash bang through my beds like a mad-woman, only to remember later that evening "Oh, wow- didn't I have some _____ planted there?"

This time of year I must spend 30 minutes a day staring at patches of ground looking for emerging leaves that look like they might be something. Just show me a pip, a sprout, something! I still have two lost coreopsis I haven't found yet- of course the expensive ones.

And given the flash freeze we had last December there are a number of things I'm wondering if made it- I weeded right through a bed of Colocasia Pink China and never saw a thing but IIRC they are late coming up.

I keep a plant list of everything I have- I enter the plant when I buy it. The last couple of years I have taken to adding notes next to plants (down by the bottle tree or next to the birdbath) and it has saved my memory more than once. I even keep the scraps of paper I doodle planting plans on so I can go back later if I need to to figure out what I put where.

I do have a baby shrub in a new bed that I have no idea what is- we moved so many things last fall I simply lost track. I think it is a crape myrtle, but they are so late to leaf out here I'll not know for another month.

I am pretty certain I have lists of seeds and when I do labels, I list numbers and dates, as well as species names...but I have a sheepdog who loves nothing more than to carefully remove every label if I turn my back for an instant....

I had to stop using a long-handled hoe because I was such a maniac - I have a little onion hoe and a ho-mi (which I don't love as much as I hoped because the blade is at a weird angle).

I did decide to plant a hardy geranium but managed to toss a trowel-full of soil on top of a pot of tomato seedlings, mangling half of them. Yeah, I am stiffening my sinews in preparation for a long season of planticide.

Young seedlings at that stage don't need supplements and may be harmed so it isn't generally recommended. It all depends on the nutrient levels in your particular product (kelp extracts come with all sorts of varying nutrient levels), how well you dilute it, the potting mix you are using and its water retention capabilities. In other words, there is no simple answer given all the variables. Once they have 2 sets of true leaves a VERY diluted (1/8-1/4 strength) supplement may be of assistance but how much again depends on the nutrient levels in the supplement you are using. N stimulates top growth which, without care, can quickly out-strip the root growth needed to support it. With seedlings it is root development that is vital, not top growth. Hope this helps. Dave

My computer won't do pictures, or maybe it's just me but..... I used Pro-Mix seed starting mix. I have a 2 foot and a 4 foot fluorescent fixture, with grow lights in one and full spectrum tubes in the other. They pretty much light up the whole basement. I have them on a timer for 16 hours. I kept them about 2 inches above the seedlings, maybe less. Can they be too close? I used cinnamon and garlic water to prevent damp-off. I didn't have a fan, but there's a vent approximately 5 feet away and we have a heat recovery ventilator, so although there wouldn't be a large amount of air movement, there is some. I spritzed once or twice a day and also watered every few days or so when I thought it might be needed. I used coco pots, which I think led to my seedlings' demise. I think they suck the moisture from the soil? Also, after reading a few posts, I thought maybe I was overwatering, so I slowed it down. Now my seedlings are crispy and dead, hee, hee! Obviously I went from one extreme to the other. BTW The marigolds were only about 2 inches tall, or less, with 6 leaves. I planted them on March 20th. Does that seem right? Does everyone agree that my watering may have been the problem? I think I'll try again. This time I'm going to use plastic trays that friends kept from those precooked chickens people buy at the grocery store. Then I should be able to regulate the dampness of the soil better?

IMHO that is acutually respectable compared to a few I've seen bloom in my seedling beds. You know it's bad when you have to grab your right hand with your left to keep yourself from yanking it out of the ground immediately upon seeing it's FFO. I think it was Brook who said something about if they are butt ugly from the start, they aren't like get better with age. LOL I would definately give that one there some more time before making a decision. Linda

Well, coldest temp they can stand without keeling over and coldest temp without suffering long-term damage to production is two different questions. The first is easy--as long as they don't freeze, they will live. The second is less easy--I have yet to find a definitive answer that has solid research behind it, and you won't find definite agreement or consistent reporting of experiences here between the various gardeners. They will grow very slowly, however, and sometimes not at all, until temps get up into the 50s. However, if you don't have a lot of plants, you can bring them into the warmth of your house at night. It's kind of neat in the early stages to see them visibly growing overnight after having had a day out in good light and a night in a toasty house. It can get pretty easy to forget and leave them out when it's too cold, though. People can give better advice if you give us your location. You can have that info display after your username. Go into >Your Houzz > Edit Profile >Advanced Settings>scroll a little more than half way down and you'll see a field called "Climate Zone for Garden Forums". You can put your geographic location, zone, etc. there.

And I thought this was just me! I too do the lists with all the details and even bought a 5000 pack of labels. But I always take on way more than I can handle. Moving things around whether it be in containers or the ground and things get confusing because I can't always remember what I did. I started journaling my efforts several years ago. That helps some. Then I started taking pics of areas and seedling stages to help me remember. Not a perfect system, but does help quite a bit.

Ho yes - this idea we will somehow 'remember' what we have sowed 6 months ago when I have forgotten where I put my secateurs less than 10 minutes ago!

Last autumn, I was definitely going to make a much better, more coherent and harmonious garden - For sure, I was going on about it on here...well, all that is out of the window and I am once again, resigned to the fact of the usual mishmash of inappropriate plants, poked into any old space. However, there is a positive side of this - the possible pleasures of 'surprises'...like a spring birthday or something. Accepting a certain lack of control or planning does lead to chances of serendipity, little spots of loveliness which appear out of the blue.

Tucking away one of the remaining Rosemoor geraniums underneath the hesperis, I think it will be good enough to grow some new plants and have some interesting garden vignettes to enjoy (or not) but hey, it is all fleeting and ephemeral because gardens are always in the process of change.

In my zinnia breeding hobby, good labels in the garden are pretty much a prerequisite. I did my label shopping at Kincaid Plant Markers
