brugmansia from the spring raleigh swap ..
Comments (36)I've had best luck overwintering Brugs by applying some chopped up oak leaves for mulch and not cutting back the old stems until spring. The stems are hollow and if water gets down there and freezes you will usually loose them. If you do want to cut them back in the fall you can cap the cut ends with a small piece of tinfoil....See More2019 Spring Swap - Raleigh
Comments (42)Hopefully i will have time to label what I am bringing but for those of you that want to do some research before tomorrow afternoon, I am bringing a couple of Bird of Paradise divisions, two are spoken for (Karen and Les) and I have one more tiny one that has no roots but the bulbous base is healthy and large so it should root out in a month or so. I have a large nectarine tree that I bought from one of the big box stores that is labeled 'Contender' Peach which is the variety I am looking for - again, this one's a nectarine which are next to impossible to keep happy in my yard. I have one small strawberry that I bought last year in the fall and never got around to planting, it is a named variety. I have a stack of 2-3 gallon sized black plastic pots. One of my baby tree ferns. This one is two joined together at the base. I cannot keep it happy over the winter so it needs a new home. The parent was sold to me as an "Australian Tree Fern" of which there are way too many varieties. I have no idea which one it is but I do know that to keep them pest free you have to water the crown and the trunk EVERY STINKING DAY OF THE YEAR. Otherwise they get overwhelmed with white fuzzy mealy bugs which can kill the tree in one year. This type also has irritating fuzz that it will shed if you touch it too much. When they are happy they grow about a foot a year. I am bringing a 'Clementine de Nules' Mandarin potted citrus. It does well and produces about a dozen fruits each summer (they ripen in the fall). I dug out three babies from one of my variegated agaves, the mama came from Plant Delights and looks like 'Desert Diamond' but I got her years ago before that one came out so I don't know what the name is. I've got a 'Black Mission' fig baby for Mike and a no-name Blackberry for Sabji. I can't wait to see everyone tomorrow!...See MoreRaleigh spring swap 2019 mystery plant
Comments (3)Well, putting aside the perspective of the bricks in the background, which makes it look ginormous and like it would never fit into a styrofoam cup, I'll guess that it's one of the red Alternantheras. A. 'Red Threads ' is one of my favorites and if that's what it is I'm jealous that I missed it....See More2020 Raleigh Spring Swap
Comments (9)Yeah. Sorry but the parks dept in Garner hasn't contacted me to tell me we can have a shelter (they put the spring rental on "hold"). I keep thinking they will notify me that we can come back but I think they reduced their staff so they don't have anyone to clean up afterwards so they are either limiting rentals or not renting shelters at all. I am super busy fixing my greenhouse, basement, and all three porches while I am furloughed from the state fair so I don't have time anyway. If the pandemic is still going strong by April 2021 I will host a swap at my house instead of the park....See MoreSabji garden (7b), Raleigh NC
