Cutting LVT into Smaller Tiles-Possible?

I've fallen in love with Mannington LVT Rushmore 18" square. I'd like to put them in my basement and space them about 3/8" apart and grout. My staircase leads into the basement and I'm wondering if, for the treads of the stairs, it's possible to cut the tiles into a smaller version. Maybe 6" pieces and grout them 1/4" apart? The biggest you can go for grout is 3/16" and read the install instructions for sure . IMO the smaller the grout the better . As for cutting them for the stairs why 6" pieces your stairs need to be more than 6" deep so maybe talk to an actual installer before you really make a mess.

I actually ended up going with 1/4" which I regret because it's a lot of grout look, very rustic. I wish I'd gone smaller, but that would have meant A LOT more cuts in the tile. I think the 1/8 would have been perfect. I used unsanded because I used glossy ceramic tile. I've not had any trouble with it, and it's been about a year. My only problem was two edge pieces came off, but it was because they'd not been stuck to the mastic appropriately. I used black tile with black grout. I DO like the look.

tile saw to cut pavers

Kudzu9 and all, I have nearly finished cutting pavers with the tile saw and have learned a few things. Overall, the saw works well. It cost $82 from HD. The blade it came with made about 50 full depth cuts before replacement. I have made another 50+ cuts with the replacement blade ($14) and it is still ok. 1. I had to remove the splitter and safety shield because the pavers are 2 3/8" thick and would interfere. 2. Most of the cutting was done freehand from the back of the saw dragging the pavers toward me. This got me out of the spray and gave me a better view and feel to keep the cut straight and avoid stalling the blade. The fence was not parallel enough to the blade to avoid binding, especially with a ton of grit in it. 3.The reservoir becomes clogged with cement mud and needs to be flushed every hour or two to avoid starving the blade of water and overheating. 4. Where a single cut is required on a block, I made only 1 cut and broke the block with a bolster. 5. For border wedges, I had to sever each cut with the saw from top and bottom to preserve the line because the bolster break can be uneven. 6. My pavers are "tumbled" so I chipped each cut edge with a chipping hammer to look like the others. That was fast and easy 7. I will have used the saw for 4 days. The rental price for a masonry wet saw was $57/day plus a charge for blade wear? Cutting dry is crazy dusty and I had to replace a circular saw the last time when I cut rock dry. Take your time and the tile saw does fine. Thank you all for your input.

I'm a retired floorman for over 40 years experience and went to a union school to learn the trade. Installers were told to take up asbestos tile and sheet vinyl with asbestos back years ago because they did not know of any danger so I sanded it down with a drum sander or took up 9 x 9 tile but in the 80's we were told it was dangerous so by law we could not do it. Wetting it down is part of the process to remove with masks and proper disposal. As far as danger in your house even if the tile glue which is black cut back had asbestos in it, if overlay-ed with plywood and new flooring is okay because it is then concealed and there is no harm to you. Years ago FHA required asbestos had to be used because it was fire retardant would not burn but melt. I sanded it for years and still not developed Mesothelioma Cancer.

Most LVT has pretty rigid guidelines on how level your subfloor must be. The online Adura Max installation guidelines states floor must be level within 3/16 of an inch over 10 feet (pretty standard). https://www.mannington.com/-/media/Files/Installation-Instructions/AduraMaxInstallation6292016.pdf?la=en As long as the floor is level and meets the other criteria (minimal deflection, etc), how you run it is up to you (joist direction irrelevant). Many like to run the long axis of the flooring with the longest dimension of the room(s) to minimize cuts. Others like to run their floor perpendicular to the incoming sunlight to minimize the appearance of the seams. You can also go diagonally but waste will increase. Once you get your flooring, open a box and lay some out (don't have to click it together). Try some different orientations and see what looks best in your space, take into account running the flooring under the refrig, stove, and dishwasher (do NOT install under permanent cabinets). As far as I know, the bevel is not there to mimimize chipping. Some of the original complaints about LVT was it looked like sheet vinyl. The bevel makes it obvious it's separate planks/tiles and makes it look more realistic. You should do fine with wheelchair/walker traffic.

It will be professionally installed and the instructions followed. My question is regarding the cutting. Disregard the size or the grout line. I'm just wanting to know if the edges are sealed or some odd thing that will negate a cut on all 4 sides.

No, it will not work. When you cut the vinyl tile, the cut edge "raises up" slightly to a sharp point, whereas the factory finish edge has a slight rounded edge with the wear layer turning over a bit on the built-up layers. These cuts should always be hidden.

You can even buy a $0.99 cent tile and test it yourself, you'll see what I mean. If it were VCT, that's another story.
