Remodeling Bathrooms DIY

I need a recessed medicine cabinet that will fit in a 24" x 18" cavity

last year

I am renovating a duplex and completely redoing both bathrooms (they are identical). They previously had recessed medicine cabinets with space for a 24" x 18" cutout. I would really love to avoid doing any more rough carpentry to resize these. I could reuse the original ones (they're approx 100 years old) but would prefer to update if possible.

It's pretty difficult to shop for these because the size listed is always the exterior dimensions. Does anyone have a recommendation for a recessed medicine cabinet that would fit here? I would prefer to spend a few hundred dollars on each at most. Thank you.

In my last two homes they were built to fit the space. A carpenter could do this.

We used the Rejuvenation cabinet and carved the extra 1” from the adjacent blocking since it’s 19”x24”—people here gave me instructions on how to do it years ago so that thread might still be around. It was a relatively simple DIY project. We used the same cabinet in a new bathroom recently since I really like it. They’ve since moved the production overseas but I think the dimensions are the same.

Thanks for the suggestion! I need something that's not *terribly* much wider in the mirror--it's pretty tight. I did find this one, eventually: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UESRIS?&tag=shopwiki-us-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325 It's rough opening is supposedly 13.5" I think there's enough wood in the frame that we can scrape 1/4 inch away on each side, and at the bottom & top. It's a shame--the old cabinet is of course very sturdy, in the cabinet and in the mirror & frame, and hinge. But it's hard to find one of comparable quality. And if I did, it would probably be about 3/4 of an inch too wide. That wouldn't be a problem if I were starting from scratch, but I need to keep it simple. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for your thoughts.fori, I think it will overwhelm, my DH doesn't and the salesperson at the bath/plumbing supply company tells me oversized cabinets are the style! It is a 10x10 bathroom, with a 78 inch vanity on one wall. The cabinets are 24x33, 5 1/2 in. deep...just seems way too big to me. I don't need the storage, we're having an antique-style linen closet built for the other wall that will have plenty of storage. pricklypearcactus, the "window framing" was just what our GC was going to do for our recessed cabinets in the other bathroom! I just wasn't sure if the construction of a wall mount would allow it to be recessed....guess we'll have to go look at them (we're keeping them stored at the supply co. until we're ready for them).

This is one below would match very well the style of the vanity, but U$ 380 is a lot: Medicine Cabinets:Cherry Medicine Cabinet - Handmade Woodworks Would it look weird if I just put a frameless recessed mirror cabinet there? I mean because the 2 main mirrors have a white shaker frame, the recessed cabinet would be frameless. If you think it's fine, I could get a Robern one, like this: Robern What size should it be considering the vanity mirrors are 24x36"including the frame? I could maybe go with a semi recessed shaker style with mirror like these: Shutter Medicine Cabinet : Medicine Cabinets : Restoration Hardware Cartwright Medicine Cabinet : Cartwright : Restoration Hardware But might need to refinish to match whites of cabinets. 101 DIY project & get the exact size you need. I made my own. 5 of them between the last two homes. Out of scrap hardwood & Plexiglass from a huge early-gen computer that I rescued from a dumpster. Basic box with a plant on back. Drill holes for shelf supports before assembling the box. Cut Plexi shelves. Add a door. The first ones were doors made of a piece of 5/8" plywood with 1/4" solid wood edge banding, mirror held with clips and hung with shutter hinges. Later upgraded the doors to hardwood mirror frames.

@wdccruise what do you think? how many medicine cabinets have you seen that are wider than they are tall? Let alone, how many do you think they were making in the 1920s that have more width than length. 24" tall....

@ci_lantro Sounds like a little bit more work than I would like to do, but maybe a last resort.

@girlnamedgalez8a I am the carpenter in this situation. I didn't realize how non-standard these dimensions were.

I had mine made by the guy who did my cabinets. It has a door that matches the vanity door in miniature. I didn't need it to be mirrored as the original one was since I had plenty of mirrors after the remodel.

Or search for Rejuvenation medicine cabinet—they make several variations, and all but one are the same dimensions. (Wright is the one that’s different, I think.) We have two (one purchased for a new bathroom last year and the other for our existing bath 9+ years ago) and really like them; initially got one from another store and returned it because the quality was disappointing. We were DIYing the first installation and building it from scratch was well beyond our skillsets, but this was pretty simple. We are in a very high cost labor area so would have paid considerably more to have a carpenter build one. YMMV if you’re in a lower cost area.

Mine were built between the studs in the wall. The only thing on the sheetrock was the frame & the door.
