I need a recessed medicine cabinet that will fit in a 24" x 18" cavity

I am renovating a duplex and completely redoing both bathrooms (they are identical). They previously had recessed medicine cabinets with space for a 24" x 18" cutout. I would really love to avoid doing any more rough carpentry to resize these. I could reuse the original ones (they're approx 100 years old) but would prefer to update if possible.

It's pretty difficult to shop for these because the size listed is always the exterior dimensions. Does anyone have a recommendation for a recessed medicine cabinet that would fit here? I would prefer to spend a few hundred dollars on each at most. Thank you.

In my last two homes they were built to fit the space. A carpenter could do this.

We used the Rejuvenation cabinet and carved the extra 1” from the adjacent blocking since it’s 19”x24”—people here gave me instructions on how to do it years ago so that thread might still be around. It was a relatively simple DIY project. We used the same cabinet in a new bathroom recently since I really like it. They’ve since moved the production overseas but I think the dimensions are the same.

The new cabinet is 36" wide (triview, frameless). Yes, it's plaster, and they will have to cut a hole, but I'm hoping they know how to do that. The master bath shower plumbing is behind the wall about 20" to the left of the edge of the master bath medicine cabinet. The cabinet will go to about 17" (where the old wallpaper ends in the picture), so it may be tight. The person who did the initial measurements did look at the master bath and did some measuring, and I told her the mirror was right behind the mirror in the hall bath. They have been kind of pi**y about my questioning anything (because they TOLD me it might not work, that's supposed to cover them). We've been through a little drama over the tile repair, too. I don't know why it is that people who you hire to do work for you are not more accommodating. I don't think we have been difficult, but OTOH, it's our house and we're paying for this. I think the deal is that all these bathroom places prefer to gut and put in all new stuff. They are not really renovators.

Thanks everyone for your help. I love those copper frames @ CB2 and even the deco wood mirrors, but I feel like there is so much going on in this room, I want some elements to repeat, hence the bronze. (I’m going for a quiet 12” tile floor that sort-of looks like sand) @Nancy in Mich thanks so much for mentioning the faucet and the pivot sink. You are right! No pivot mirror! I don’t want it crowding my faucet. BTW, the PB one comes in black, not bronze (doh, my bad) so that wouldn’t work anyway. But thanks for this good point. That would have been horrible for me. Any thoughts on the drawer hardware for that vanity (the top blue dresser style one)? My thought is to emphasis the dresser look and have each drawer have a pair of knobs. I’d choose chrome to match the Rohl faucet, so there’s some repetition. Maybe little round ones (Vs. square). For the hand-towel, I found a 10” wide l-shaped bar (from Kohler, looks a bit industrial, so goes w/ the sconces, in my mind) and then the tp holder also in bronze. I‘m wary of mixing metals in such a small room, so it would be chrome faucet and knobs (and toilet lever, I guess) and ORB everything else, including the hadware on the pocket door.

M Miller, I apologize to you, but you didn't JUST ask a question..."Your" making things too hard." Some people on Houzz have a tendency to criticize and suggest things that people have already said they didn't want. Some pros and designers know exactly how to get their points across without criticizing. Some people don't read all of the posts, and just respond so the OP feels they must answer and explain. Live_Wire_Oak set me off, because he uses the word "ignorance" every time he posts, and your post came right after his did. You said recessed lights were called for, and I already said I did not want them. It doesn't matter why. But, I apologize for saying welcome to his club., and I hope your head gets back in place. : ) RL Relocation, your response was very helpful. Thank you. I did create a mockup with a cardboard box. The old light had 5 or 6 huge bulbs in the bar and stuck out about 8 inches from the wall. The new light that I found is 5" deep so it will be better than what I had. Even recessed lights will shine down just like wall lights above the mirror. The light is 10" tall so the doors should clear. I thought about not recessing a medicine cabinet. The area to the right in the 2nd picture could have a floor to ceiling cabinet installed instead. We already have a 24" deep cabinet beside the tub for towels. A shallow cabinet by the door could replace the medicine cabinet. This is an upstairs bathroom that gets used only when we have extra overnight guests upstairs. We still have a lower level bedroom and bathroom for guests. The upstairs seldom gets used unless we have more than 2 people staying. Upstairs can hold an additional 6 people in the bedrooms, plus 2 in the TV area. So, that bathroom and the entire upstairs is one I seldom see. This is a lake house so people love coming to the lake. Wd cruise, I looked at those same lights. On the first link I couldn't figure out which way the bulbs would shine. It said down and up. Maybe they get inserted horizontally?? On the 2nd link, the light direction said up, so if I put the fixture on the ceiling, the bulbs would point to the opposite wall. On the last link, it also said down and up. For a while that is all I could find. I think I would be better with lights pointing down towards the sink than pointing to the two walls. Plus, with the down and up lights, one of them would be really close to the drywall, I think. I may be visioning it wrong though. Thanks for your help.

101 DIY project & get the exact size you need. I made my own. 5 of them between the last two homes. Out of scrap hardwood & Plexiglass from a huge early-gen computer that I rescued from a dumpster. Basic box with a plant on back. Drill holes for shelf supports before assembling the box. Cut Plexi shelves. Add a door. The first ones were doors made of a piece of 5/8" plywood with 1/4" solid wood edge banding, mirror held with clips and hung with shutter hinges. Later upgraded the doors to hardwood mirror frames.

@wdccruise what do you think? how many medicine cabinets have you seen that are wider than they are tall? Let alone, how many do you think they were making in the 1920s that have more width than length. 24" tall....

@girlnamedgalez8a I am the carpenter in this situation. I didn't realize how non-standard these dimensions were.

I had mine made by the guy who did my cabinets. It has a door that matches the vanity door in miniature. I didn't need it to be mirrored as the original one was since I had plenty of mirrors after the remodel.

Or search for Rejuvenation medicine cabinet—they make several variations, and all but one are the same dimensions. (Wright is the one that’s different, I think.) We have two (one purchased for a new bathroom last year and the other for our existing bath 9+ years ago) and really like them; initially got one from another store and returned it because the quality was disappointing. We were DIYing the first installation and building it from scratch was well beyond our skillsets, but this was pretty simple. We are in a very high cost labor area so would have paid considerably more to have a carpenter build one. YMMV if you’re in a lower cost area.

Mine were built between the studs in the wall. The only thing on the sheetrock was the frame & the door.
