Gap Where Crown Meets Ceiling - Best Fix?
Comments (3)There isn't a wall or ceiling anywhere that is fully plumb and level in all dimensions. Ceilings are especially problematic in that regard when using modern materials like drywall. Gapping is, unfortunately, normal. Even in new construction. Caulk can fix a lot of sins with painted finishes. I would want a paintable caulk used, and then use the cabinet company's paint to touch it up. Or, the alternative would have been to take care of the issue during the design phase. Because the issue is endemic to "to the ceiling" look, I always use a multipart molding when taking moldings to the ceiling. That allows a certain amount of "travel" to occur with the molding used at the top. The intermediate piece allows the crown to float up or down and be installed tight to the ceiling. Here's an example of the type of thing I'm talking about. This is exaggerated, because the customer didn't want to do stacked cabinets and has 12" of space between the top of the cabinets and ceiling. It wouldn't be my personal combination of moldings for the situation, but it's what she asked for....See MoreGap between cabinets and ceiling
Comments (8)We did a crown molding and flat trim combo to fill the gap. It's a little less overwhelming than all crown. I don't have a great picture, but you can see it below. We got the idea from a friend's kitchen that had a full 4" of the flat trim before their smaller crown started. It turned out that it was a good thing we planned on the flat trim because our ceiling level varied considerably and the flexibility in the height of the flat trim disguises a multitude of sins....See MoreDo you caulk or grout where backsplash tiles meet cabinets?
Comments (6)Although by the book that joint (between the top of the backsplash and bottom of upper cabinets) should be caulked, 9 times out of ten, it'll get grouted, only because it's not usually very noticeable if it does crack. The bottom joint, however, where the backsplash meets the countertop, is a very different story. That joint should ALWAYS be caulked....See Morewhite ceiling molding meets dark cabinet trim
Comments (18)thank you for all the feedback so far. I should have clarified that this is not the kitchen but a built in nook for computer and TV. The kitchen is white and the crown molding matches well. This nook if off the kitchen but around a corner so not immediately visible. We talked about not doing the crown molding in that area but we couldn't come up with a good breaking point from the rest of the house. We had talked about taking the white molding across the top of the dark cabinets but I didn't know if that was an acceptable design option. I see PPF has posted a rendering of it and others are suggesting it. Here we are trying it out. This might be my favorite option because of the clean lines, I just couldn't find any picture on line of something like that so i didn't know if it was taboo....See MoreDebbie Downer
