Hello again! The antique bed I wrote about is in a univ. town where we own a 2nd home. I finally got over there and studied the framework. The side rails looked too narrow at top to add boards or plywood across them(it could have easily slipped off either way if not nailed in, and the rails were too old and thin to nail into) I could have used L shaped brackets on the underside but that seemed like a lot of work. I found a REALLY cheap box spring at a country furn. store, bought and delivered for $65!; added to the top and it looks great! Not the solution I thought would work, but this bed has a very tall head and footboard so I still have most of the woodwork showing. Thanks for everyone's good ideas!!! PS on another bed in our condo, and on my son's bed in his house, we added the risers ($9 at Walmart/Target) and they are great! Bought queen size dust ruffles for full size beds to make sure they went to the floor. Lots of storage underneath now, especially for a college student!

The same thing happened to me yesterday. Similar gap at the foot of the bed. When I rang the store they tried to bully me into accepting that this was standard and that the doona (some call it a duvet, it's doona in Australia) would hang over and fill the gap. Well, for the doona to do this on the 35 cm thick mattress, it would have to be 2.2 metres long and standard doonas are barely two metres long. One kind salesperson suggested that their handyman could shorten the rails for me, which I originally thought would solve the problem, but then I was told by someone else that that sort of work is not in his duty statement and legal action could arise if anything happened when he was doing a job he was not supposed to. Tomorrow I will spend an hour dissembling the bed, shortening the side rails, shifting the connecting brackets along a couple of centimetres each end and then reassembling. A fairly simple job but the shop refused to take any responsibility. The man I spoke with even went so far as to try and tell me that he was doing me a big favour if he took the bed back and refunded me my money because I HAD CHANGED MY MIND!! What a bully! None of my friends will be going to "40 Winks" after this.

It would be convenient if you could custom make it with the help of an artisan. The frame should be made from right type of oak wood. It is durable and moth resistant.

I had never heard of the Sven beds but they are a bundle with a mattress and I personally would not want to buy the platform and the mattress as a single unit. All of the theoretical features of the Sven bed are in my Leggett & Platt adjustable platform and there is a similar very long warranty. Price for the Sven bed seems too low. I bought in Fall 2017 before the pandemic inflation and a Temperpedic queen size basic mattress was $2000 and price was the same at all stores as they dont discount. I didn’t like the feel of memory foam so I went with a latex and foam mattress but my next mattress will be 100% latex. My queen size adjustable platform and mattress was about $3800 with tax and I would imagine prices have gone up since then and king size with adjustable frame would be commensurately higher. The other adjustable frame I was considering was a Sealey which was comparable in price to the Leggett. I think the frame was about $1500 and the mattress was about $2000. A latex mattress would have been about $3000 as I recall.
