Whatever color you choose, I’d paint everything but the shutters in it.

What about the molding and random office closet door? Paint that the dark color too?

I would, yes, especially as your DH likes dark colors. It would look very cohesive and sophisticated.

If you’re on Instagram, look at the European paint accounts like Farrow & Ball, etc. It’s very much the thing to paint everything the same color. I think it’s a fabulous look in certain situations.

Ceiling as well? Keep the shutters the white though right? And that last pic is what he has been dreaming about! I have that saved in my idea book.

Yes on the ceiling. I think all navy would be awesome.

The shutters — I love the style and think they’d be fine as is, but if you don’t need them for privacy, you could use curtains. It’s hard to say without being there and seeing your whole house, inside and outside. If you have shutters in all rooms, I’d leave them.

I’m trying to find out the color of that last one, I can’t tell if it’s more slate or navy!

Paint the French doors (inside the office) also with wall/built in paint? Assuming yes.

I would paint the entire room black except for doors & california shutters. I would also revise the furniture layout to have the desk facing the door. The furniture look somewhat dated so I would suggest either a working table or desk with storage (depends if this office is used for work on a daily basis or only occasionally), new chairs, new brass lighting, new sisal area rug. Black & white family photos (same size - same frames) on the top shelf of the bookcase would complete the decor.

Thanks! Would you suggest to paint the built ins? As of now - leaning towards painting built in, walls, French door (inside office aide) the white door. Keep molding and shutters as in. Keep ceiling as is.

Actually I just saw your rendering - looks as though built in and French doors as is, shutters and door as is.

I show the built-in black "as is" (that's the colour I see on my monitor), I would match the black wall colour to the built-in but in a matte finish, shutters and white door are "as is". The only think I'm not sure of because I don't see the other view of the room is wether the french doors should be white of black, and I guess it also depends on what your other doors & trim are like in your house.

In your photo, the room seems quite dark so you need very good lighting to be able to pull such dark colours off (either black of the dark blue you're thinking of).

Instead of the natural fibre rug, a vintage rug with a light background would also work nicely. Below I show one by Ruggable (machine wawhable/dryable up to size 5 x 7).

Thanks. The built in is espresso stain and the French doors are also espresso stain. Foyer is espresso stained door with our staircase with espresso stain.

The white molding is throughout the home and the doors all have the white trim; we have the white plantation shutters through out the as well.

I am starting to think keep espresso stains…

Same details as suggested previously (in black) but this time in Indigo Batik Blue. I was trying to save you painting the built-in thinking it was black but doesn't work well with Expresso.
