how should i trim this okame cherry

I pkanted this tree about a year and half ago and I want to make it grow healthy. My understabding is that I need to create a scaffolding whirl to allow it to become bushier I dont quite understand how to do this. Can someone look at my pictures and help me?

It's a young tree growing exactly the way it should, Compare to images of mature ones online and yours is just a scaled down version. Why would you want to make it look bushy? It will develop a fullness of canopy in time and with good care but that does not involve much in the way of pruning. And not at this age.

It requires NO pruning at this time. It seems to be developing exactly as it should at this point in time.

It’s absolutely as it should be. Please leave it alone. But do remove the red tape.

Well, far be it from me to swim against this riptide! :-) I've ordered another crosshead/pilaster set. metromom, the crosshead and pilasters are Fypon millwork (bought from accentbuildingproducts.com) and the wainscoting was DIY with pocket-screwed MDF and cove molding (photo of WIP below). Given the product size offerings and dimensional needs/limitations, I can't make the door surround much bigger, but I did buy a keystone to go in the middle of the door crosshead to dress it up a bit.

How far should a cherry tree be from the deck ?

I know at least two cases of people building their decks around already existing cherry trees, without any rooting damage to the deck. The trees probably took some root damage though. Largest problem was birds sitting in the trees, eating the cherries and pooping on the deck.

If you want some color and interest in the dining room, I would think about changing what is over the buffet and getting a marvelous piece of artwork. Either one large piece or a trio, that goes to the height of the door frame. I would also change what is in those cabinets to make for a more interesting display in terms of color, shape and texture. For example, on the left, you have all white objects, it looks like serving pieces or bowls, all lined up in a row. This is a snooze. If you do these two things, you may not feel the desperate need to paint those cabinets.

You dont think i should cut off a few bramches to promote bushiness? The red tape is holding on the tree wrap which prevents sunscald. The wrap is coming off in early april.

tree time is counted in decades .. your tree has been there one year.. whats your hurry ..

there is a tree forum.. and that is where you will find pruning advice.. in a year or 3 ...

every leaf is an energy making machine.. and its job for the next 2 or 3 years.. is to grow a root mass as big as the tree you see above ground... and cutting off limbs.. aka leaves.. is not going to speed up root growth ...and neither will fertilizer.. all it takes is time.. and if you fert the lawn.. the tree will get more than it will ever need ...

just water it deeply.. and infrequently.. and insure it properly watered in july and august.. and you should be all set ..

chris d, HERE is a previous post about 'Okame' cherry. One of the pix shows trees that are rounded over, the others are untouched. What do you think of them?

are those giant wide ones untouched? thats exactly how ibwamt mine to be in 20 years. I dont like the perfectly rounded look.

The pic at McDonalds on the other thread was taken when the tree was at peak bloom 23 days ago. I am in NE Maryland, flowers for this cherry are spent.
