How do I start a garden in my backyard? more
Comments (6)If you do a search of the forum (there is a "search" function at the top of the forum page) for how to post pictures, you'll find a number of threads explaining how to do it. There is a Test Forum where you can practice before you try it here. Without seeing what you're talking about, or understanding why you might want to put sections of disconnected fencing in, it's hard to say if it would work or not. In general, you'd go all the way across but there might be some circumstances where a partial fence would be a reasonable solution to a problem. How to start, where to put it, how big to make it, and what to plant in it all depend on what your goal is for the garden. To look at? To putter in? If so, how much time do you want to spend puttering? To screen out something beyond it? To screen yourself from someone else? To create shade? A haven for birds or other wildlife? Should it be easy to care for? Look good in winter? Or summer/spring/fall only? Answer these questions for yourself first, and you should have a better idea of what you want it to be when it's done. If you aren't sure what you want, get yourself to the library and take out everything you can find on landscape design and gardening, and see what appeals to you to get you started. If you're overwhelmed by the prospect of doing your own design, and you want it to look good right away without a lot of trial and error, consider hiring a designer to get you started....See MoreI’m looking for some ideas for how to arrange my plants in my backyard
Comments (33)You are getting there :-)) You will have an entirely different perspective once you get the black pots elevated. And you can always add more color with flowering plants. What happened to the white/cream colored containers? You could mix them in with the black ones to make more of a statement. The pots in the middle photo (mostly blue tones) are still too lined up. btw, the groupings do not need to be equal in impact or quantity :-)...See MoreHow should I design my backyard and alleyway?
Comments (4)Who does the container belong to? Could we see the whole space as it relates to your house. I would put a fence up first so you know exactly where your property is . and to hide the shed. The garage is yours I presume. the cheap is get a load of recycled tires sprspread them over the area and iether put a trampoline there for the kids or a hammock and some planters . Since I have no idea of the size of your patio IMO the bigger the better so you could extend the patio to under the tree.for a nice outdoor kitchen...See MoreHow can I create an outdoor space in my backyard?
Comments (7)Think of your yard as two zones--the entire right side for your patio and seating backed up with a wood privacy slat fence with seating attached. The left a small green oasis with some garden beds in front of the fence with a mix of tall and medium shrubs against the fence for privacy. Here's a layout of a gravel patio that could work for you--patio filling the right hand side entirely. If you have the budget, attach a wood arbor/pergola structure to your slat fence either partway or entirely for a sailcloth. Or, if you have budget, something like this for shade: So patio on the right, lawn and garden to look at on the left with a mix of evergreen shrubs as screening on that side. This will give you an airy backyard. Meanwhile, go out and get a can of cobalt blue paint and paint your garage door bright blue. Add a window box in blue to that window to give the illusion of a house, not a garage....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
