How You Can Check Your Home & Air Conditioning System
Comments (5)I just now came back to see some responses here. Hey, Coolmen CJ, congratulations on being NCI Certified. No it is not spam; I nor no one else makes a penny from the information I provide on my Web sites. However, if you are a good Tech, you will get a lot more work, because when folks get interested in how their HVAC system is performing & in knowing how to reduce energy use, they will call a contractor for Tech help. I think he is getting a little too hi tech. for the home owner to do all this checking. How many home owners are going to buy air testing meter? (They don't need it.) A lot of dealers don't have them. Later paulbm I don't actually disagree with you Paul. The Tech needs all the air testing instruments; the folks running my simple test only need a thermometer & either a humidity gage or do a wet bull temp check. They can respond on twitter or on a forum, or e-mail me, & I'll go much further with that seemingly insignificant information. Just using that little info data; I can tell them an amazing amount of performance & trouble shooting information, concerning their system's performance. If they provide supply air & rerurn air wet bulb, I can closely ballpark with psychrometric software the BTUH that their system is delivering within those operating conditions. Every Tech could do that, especially if they had worked in HVAC/R since before the mid-1970's. The mfg'ers ought to provide the condenser splits so I wouldn't have to do extra figuring to get the condenser temp split at differing load conditions. Challenge me with actual test data & I'll show what we can come up with I need to know the "SEER Rating of the condenser." Typing with eraser ends of pencils, cause my hands are messed-up is difficult so I'll quit, for now. - udarrell Here is a link that might be useful: Simple A/C Performance Checks Anyone Can Do...See MorePlease help me change my air conditioning filter
Comments (4)Open the grill by releasing the two latches (pull them down, they're attached to the edge of the grill and don't come off). The grill is hinged at the other end and should there hang open. If you want to remove it completely to clean and/or paint it, it should unhook at the hinges. The filter simply fits up inside the frame. Swing the grill up/closed and reset the latches. If there's no filter, then whoever was there previous to you either ran the system without a filter, or removed it before they left. If run for a period of time without a filter, the evaporator (cooling) coil up in the blower unit may be clogged. In some oddball cases there may be a(nother) filter up inside the blower unit ... which if so, that may explain why (if) there's no filter at the grill. But the point of having the filter at the grill is for ease of access to change it without going into the blower unit....See MoreHow many tons of air conditioning do I need?
Comments (9)The only way to properly size the system is with a industry accepted manual J load calculation. That is step 1. I have been supplying load calculations for over 35 years and it is the only way to get it right. The size required is determined by the construction materials, area weather patterns, family usage of the home and direction the home faces. Always get a load calculation done first. Other than that and you are just guessing. The air distribution system can not be sized correctly without the manual J load calculations. 8 tons does sound like a lot. The unit run time controls the humidity. You.must get it right....See MoreIssues with my air conditioning
Comments (2)I agree with Klem1. There's many causes that it could be. I am doubtful that it needs any more refer unless you can find a leak. Typically if there are no leaks then the amount of refer isn't the problem unless it never had the right amount added. Also, about the fan not turning off, check the wiring behind the T-stat as well as at the furnace to ensure they are not poorly installed....See MoreKendrah
