kitchen soffit in new build

Hoping to get some advice on the soffit in my kitchen. It’s a new build, I decided to go semi
Custom on cabinets and the ceilings are 10 feet high. Cabinets are already installed and now they are installing the soffits and they are large. I want them to ceiling for a finished look and to avoid dust.
Any creative ideas on how to finish this so it won’t look so large.

Can you get bigger cabinet doors to give the appearance of cabinets to the ceiling?

I would call as little attention to it as possible...no crown, same color as ceiling and cabinets. See the pics attached...the image with white cabinets "hides" the height of the soffit the best, the other 2 draw attention to it.

You've received a lot of good, helpful advice already, here and at the Kitchen forum. "most of the new models in Florida now have 12 foot ceilings in the great room and kitchen with many vaulted to 16 feet. This is especially true when there are views to water and they are using 10 foot glass doors to take advantage of the views." I understand about the views but people have to live inside a house, and in order for that to be done comfortably and pleasantly, you need a reasonable, human scale and proportions. Not something outsize and overscaled. This is already creating problems for you. At the very least with this sort of scale, an architect should plan for the interior problems/challenges that arise. As they have arisen here. You have two problems. One is the scale and size of the general project, the other is the layout of the kitchen. If we had a built in coffee machine where would you put it? First figure out how you use your kitchen, what you want and need in it, and THEN plan your kitchen. Not the other way around. How big is your family? Do you like to cook? Do you cook often or reheat takeout? Do you bbq outside? Do you eat a lot of vegetables and fruit? Do you shop for groceries often or infrequently? However, you can't consider the kitchen in a vacuum.

Still haven’t decided. This is what it looks like currently with paint and all trim. It is growing on me. I imagine once backsplash and flooring and pendant lights are in, I won’t notice it as much. But I don’t want to regret not having him fix it forever. Builder has offered to move soffit back to be flush with cabinets and we will put a piece of flat trim at cabinet and soffit joint. He did mention being concerned with the possibility of damaging cabinets in the process. He also said he would remove soffit altogether if we want. Again the only concern being the cabinets potentially being damaged. I have to decide soon.

Pretty inspiration photo! We had this kitchen layout in our last home, except we had a wall that would be located at the bottom of your plan. This included, oven/microwave combo, pantry cabinet and desk area. The counter space between our frig and sink was less than what your plan shows. Our coffee pot sat there and the cabinet above housed the drink ware. To the right of the sink, was the dishwasher- a good suggestion! Make sure you have enough aisle width, ours was tight since our island extended in front of the frig. Having the refrigerator in that spot was great for accessing the table and also outdoor dining/grilling, which we really enjoyed. On the subject of islands, ours was one flat surface. I loved it! No prep sink. Having never had one, I can't speak on their function. We did a lot of buffet style for family gatherings, so one large, clear surface worked great for that. It also served as a workspace for kids school projects. The only thing that got on my nerves, was the actual island seating. Our entrance into the kitchen was where yours is, but with having the wall, traffic flow got quite congested. Definitely could have used another foot or so. Kids and pushing chairs back in- just doesn't happen, unfortunately. We started with four stools and ended with two. They never really sat their all lined up, maybe one or two at a time. Conversation wise, no one likes to be the awkward person sitting in the middle! Also, I really disliked moving all the chair legs in the kitchen to sweep or mop around. :( The microwave might be too tall for the younger ones to reach, but maybe you want it that way. I would worry about spilling or hot things from above. A drawer type could work, but cost more as commented on. If that's not an option, might be more practical for one in the corner counter space. It obviously, wouldn't have the built in look though. Looking at the pantry, I think the storage could be better utilized if you didn't have the angled walls. Will it remain this way? Considering windows, we had one above the sink and I always wished it was larger or more of them. Looks like you will have that benefit. :)

Mama goose, I like many of the ideas for the upper cabinets. Thank you. I have gone back and forth on one island or two, but having the eat in bar separate from the work-island is a huge plus for how involved the kids are with cooking and prep. Not a huge fan of having the dining table out in the middle. I don’t think the distance from dining area to clean up station will be a problem. As for bedrooms, the plan doesn’t reflect all details. We do plan for the secondary bedrooms to be shared for two kids each. We have future expansion in mind with the stairs to upstairs for additional two bedrooms. Currently, the kids are younger and prefer for them to be downstairs. Thx everyone for feedback and ideas. Enjoy the holiday weekend.

I would just keep everything the same color. I would consider adding a flat band of cabinet trim across the tops of the doors and filler panels

If you are over budget, which often leads to "very stressed out"...just let it be. Things like this are easy to adjust later when you are not juggling 1537 other decisions. Good luck!

It is hard to tell by the pictures, does the soffit line up with the cabinet boxes or is it slightly recessed?

I think palimpest is talking about a piece of trim like below, only likely very straight edged to better fit with your cabinets style. I am not sure how that will work if the soffit is actually recessed and due to the full overlay of your cabinets which eliminates the top edge of the cabinet box being exposed. It may work well and hide the appearance of the recess, if it is applied flush with the top of the cabinet box.

The current crown does not look proportionally correct. But too elaborate of crown does not appear to be an option either. The biggest issue, that is not easily fixed, is that the cabinets should be a bit taller and the soffit shorter.

Yes I am thinking of a simple band maybe no wider than the stiles and rails of the cabinet doors to finish the look along the top of the cabinets. I don't know that you need a crown at all next to the ceiling.

@ Chris b yes, it’s slightly recessed. I assume to be able to open the cabinet. I agree cabinets should be taller. Wish I would have realized this before the install. I agree the crown needs to be larger. I hope the cabinet guy can help me get creative. Even though maybe I shouldn’t draw attention to it. 🤔

I agree with lucky, no crown moulding, it just draws the eye.
