kitchen soffit in new build

Hoping to get some advice on the soffit in my kitchen. It’s a new build, I decided to go semi
Custom on cabinets and the ceilings are 10 feet high. Cabinets are already installed and now they are installing the soffits and they are large. I want them to ceiling for a finished look and to avoid dust.
Any creative ideas on how to finish this so it won’t look so large.

Can you get bigger cabinet doors to give the appearance of cabinets to the ceiling?

I would call as little attention to it as possible...no crown, same color as ceiling and cabinets. See the pics attached...the image with white cabinets "hides" the height of the soffit the best, the other 2 draw attention to it.

Thanks for all the comments. I cannot have equal size uppers other than as drawn because of the placement of the window and the beams (it is a new build at the framing stage). I appreciate the comments about the backsplash and need to figure that out. I really do like practigal picture - but the cabinets are the same size but there is more on one side than the other. I do have an island on that is 8 feet by 5 feet and the wall with the range is 20' long.

Still haven’t decided. This is what it looks like currently with paint and all trim. It is growing on me. I imagine once backsplash and flooring and pendant lights are in, I won’t notice it as much. But I don’t want to regret not having him fix it forever. Builder has offered to move soffit back to be flush with cabinets and we will put a piece of flat trim at cabinet and soffit joint. He did mention being concerned with the possibility of damaging cabinets in the process. He also said he would remove soffit altogether if we want. Again the only concern being the cabinets potentially being damaged. I have to decide soon.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard "I've never seen that done before" and "everyone else does/has...." I agree with cpartist. Having the hood, shelves and counter stools wood will be a good balance, along with a light floor, backsplash and walls. Between the kitchen and laundry room/back hallway in our last house, I had a floor to ceiling black hutch. No windows, only light from laundry room window (kitchen was in center of house), and the black hutch was not a hole of doom and gloom when the hallway light was off. One thing to consider is taking aways one wall cabinet on each side of the range hood to visually open up and lighten that area just a bit. What is happening elsewhere in the kitchen area, like around the corner of the far right wall? I currently have black soapstone counters on the F&B Blue Gray cabinets (walls painted the same color) with a counter to ceiling scalloped soapstone backsplash behind the range. It's countered with light French oak wood floors and light ceiling. Taking chances can pay off if executed well, but you will have to listen to a few naysayers along the way.

I'd leave this layout "as is" ... except for one thing: I'd add the 24" pantry cabinet to the end of the existing cabinet run ... maybe even a 36" or two 24s. You do need the storage. Why? - The space is small, and this layout is about as efficient as it's going to get. - You really can't afford to give up space in your dining room, especially since you have a door in that room. - Go with a round (or oval) table in this space. It's not large, and a round table will allow for better circulation. - Agree with the above posters that if you remove the wall, you'll be losing necessary support. I suspect you also have water lines in this wall. - No to a pass-through in this wall. The wall backs up to a cased opening, and it just isn't going to work. - I agree with the poster above who says this layout is open, but not too open. It's kinda ideally open, in my opinion. You will be able to hear the TV or the kids in the living room, but guests won't be able to see the mess in your sink. Does the house exist yet? If not, I have a couple other small thoughts: - I'd rather see the garage door open into the foyer. This would give you convenient access to the closet by the front door, and it would allow you to place a pretty table or storage cabinet where the current garage door is shown. - Get rid of those winder stairs; they're dangerous. In the same space /for the same money you can avoid the pie-shaped steps.

I would just keep everything the same color. I would consider adding a flat band of cabinet trim across the tops of the doors and filler panels

@snappity not sure but I’m trying to go with the least expensive option as we are SO over budget already. 😭

If you are over budget, which often leads to "very stressed out"...just let it be. Things like this are easy to adjust later when you are not juggling 1537 other decisions. Good luck!

It is hard to tell by the pictures, does the soffit line up with the cabinet boxes or is it slightly recessed?

I think palimpest is talking about a piece of trim like below, only likely very straight edged to better fit with your cabinets style. I am not sure how that will work if the soffit is actually recessed and due to the full overlay of your cabinets which eliminates the top edge of the cabinet box being exposed. It may work well and hide the appearance of the recess, if it is applied flush with the top of the cabinet box.

The current crown does not look proportionally correct. But too elaborate of crown does not appear to be an option either. The biggest issue, that is not easily fixed, is that the cabinets should be a bit taller and the soffit shorter.

Yes I am thinking of a simple band maybe no wider than the stiles and rails of the cabinet doors to finish the look along the top of the cabinets. I don't know that you need a crown at all next to the ceiling.

@ Chris b yes, it’s slightly recessed. I assume to be able to open the cabinet. I agree cabinets should be taller. Wish I would have realized this before the install. I agree the crown needs to be larger. I hope the cabinet guy can help me get creative. Even though maybe I shouldn’t draw attention to it. 🤔

I agree with lucky, no crown moulding, it just draws the eye.
