Rough difference in French door price: Milgard Tuscany vs Ultra

The window and door manufacturers keep their prices pretty closely guarded, but I figure somebody on here might be able to help me with a rough ballpark figure.

I got a quote from a company for a Milgard Tuscany French door install (part of a larger quote including windows too). I chose to upgrade the door from Tuscany to Ultra, and with no other changes to the work, the price of the quote increased by $3k. They claim this is the difference in price between the two doors, but I heard elsewhere it was a lot lower, closer to $1k. Which is the truth?

Did that guy quote the entire project? If so get him to do the job. Is the Ultra a French Door as well? same bells and whistles? What is the percentage of the project for the $2K? How many windows and doors? Tough to tell and most of the pros on this site are east coast and central region and do not have access to Milgard products any longer.

Yes, both doors are French doors, same bells and whistles. It's maybe 3% of a large project including 43 windows in addition to the 1 set of French doors.

Milgard Ultra fiberglass only has single hung, no double hung; I went to their Simi Valley factory/showroom. Their Tuscany line has double hung. I was impressed with how easy it was to pull it in to clean the outside of window as compared to the Pella vinyl I tested at a Pella showroom. I was impressed with Pella’s wood with aluminum clad exterior but everything else, vinyl and fiberglass, looked very low end. The finish on the Pella fiberglass had a wrinkly texture that looked cheap. I am concerned with comments about the Milgard Ultra fiberglass finish peeling. Has anyone else experienced this? We are planning on replacing all the windows and frames on our stucco house in SoCal so I want to get this right. We have white trim inside and out so color not an issue.

I just joined today because I was researching penguin windows and there is another post on this forum I will be posting to. My daughter just got windows from Penguin 4 bedroom, 1 bath and a slide glass door window for $19,000, I don't know how she got talked into it but I'm working to help her out of this mess and have penguin pick up their windows after I show her how to have someone do a home remodel. Basically get 3 or more bids from window installers, don't let the other company know the price of a previous bidder but let them know they are competing with other installers and you will let them know if there price is acceptable the next day, just get them out of the house before you make a decision. Then research the company online if my daughter would have spent 30 seconds online she would have seen scam all over the internet about Penguin windows and it basically about pricing. So just beware and take your time. An example of pricing difference milliard windows for what she needs will cost about $220 bedroom, $99 bath and $900 for the sliding door, these are triple pane, argon filled windows and a ball park figure for window and install is under $4000, compared to $19000.00 plus interest for the other company the difference in cost would never equal the amount of any energy loss. Vancouver, WA isn't the antarctic and either is Seattle. Hope this helps.

Also check out Milgard windows and doors. I think they would be cheaper than Marvin. For my house, I installed custom commercial floor to ceiling windows and sliders (over 100 linear feet). They are very good quality and very well priced. Unfortunately, the guy who did them is no longer in business. You could google custom windows and see if you can get an estimated price quote over the phone.

OMG I love those Medallion kitchen cabinet doors! I've gone so far as to replicate them. I LOVE LOVE LOve their lines! I've had a pic of them forever, and have not given up on the idea of buying the doors for other cabinetry. My replicas are pretty darned good, though. LOVE them. I also live and breathe for inset cabinetry. It makes me go, "ahhhhooooooohhhhhhaaaaaaaa..." I disagree with FriedaJane that there is "a lot of lost space" with inset cabinetry. This has been beaten to death, but once the inset cabinets are put together, they're brought out to match the 12.75" "standard" cabinets, which makes the inside space the same. I'm here to tell you. Plus, if you were to order them, you can order them as deep as you'd like. (Brian @ The Cabinet Joint.com does it for me, yet the ones I've picked up at the H4H were the same depth!) A couple of commercial (Norcroft) base cabs I bought before I knew any better have really stupid upper drawers: 3" tall. Just look at that and get what you want. I've never heard that independent carpenters can't make frameless. It's so much easier than inset, because there's so much less precision. I'm one, who has no set, follow-the-lines design style. I think you can achieve a combination of the items you enjoy, and it'll look collected, vs. purchased. I feel sorry for people who buy the showroom and talk about their "eye." I must admit, that table is over the top fancy and oh, so fun. Right now I'm negotiating a butt-ugly armoire on CL. It's so ridiculously contrived it makes me laugh every time I look at it. Someone has painted it, so it's fancy-ness is somehow under control, but again, so over the top. If I get it, I'll make it work and love it. I really look forward to seeing what you bring together!

If the boxes are checked as far as the references on the installer I would not allow 3% to stop me from using this guy based on a price that "you heard" may be high. If you have done all your due diligence I would not hesitate to pull the trigger.

I understand your point, but it feels like a bait and switch because this happened after I had put a small amount of money down. And FWIW the "elsewhere" that I heard it from was ANOTHER PERSON AT THE SAME COMPANY. I appreciate the generalized advice, and again I get it and agree. I'm just looking for a simple data point (rough is fine) from somebody who has access to the actual Super Secretive Price Sheets.

Not everyone (meaning different distributors) will have the same discounts nor the same markup.

Maybe that was a quick off the cuff price, I know personally I have had to do more than one mea culpa over the years but shooting an off the cuff number.

But at the end of the day it is up to you. If you feel they are being deceptive or bait and switch maybe mention this or think about pulling out of the contract.

Good news. It sounded as though you had done your due diligenceand are inb good hands. Sometimes an honest conversation goes a long way, especially if dealing with an upstanding vendor.
