Janesylvia, I have a bathroom with a corner shower unit that (in a small space), and when installed, I opted for a door that swung both ways. This was done 5 years ago, and it turns out that the door leaks through the vertical gap, although not a ton. When I recently remodeled my master bath, I had the glass installer (a different company from the other bathroom), install a vertical strip on my corner shower unit, making the door open only out. This seal has stopped all leakage of water. In my limited eperience, it seems the vertical gasket or seal is much more likely to keep your shower from leaking. It was a little frustrating to always have a towel over the bathroom rug to absorb leaking water from the shower. (in addition to concerns over continual dampness on the floor)

We live in Massachusetts. I'm not sure if code allows shower controls on an exterior wall, but we are concerned about freezing pipes. Also, we don't want to lose inches of space by thickening the exterior wall for shower control insulation. Our shower head is currently in the same location as in my drawing above. We would simply be moving that little wall about 16 inches towards the exterior wall and shaving about 12 inches off the right hand side so we could install a glass panel.

I have a beautiful (to me) custom home. We have an issue that was pointed out to me by a certain sub contractor at a point when it would have been a royal, I mean ROYAL pia to correct it. We were almost ready to move in. A major job to correct a purely cosmetic issue. A cosmetic issue that we would be looking at every single day. should I have brought it up? I decided not to and did not tell my husband about the issue. I knew he would never notice. I swore the sub to secrecy. We have since moved in and have had lots of family here for lots of visits. No one has noticed it...but me because I know about it. And I will never tell. I say forget it about it and enjoy your home. The bathroom is gorgeous and remember that no matter how hard you try, your house will not be perfect.

Currently, we have an alcove whirlpool tub with tiles on the wall. No leaks that I know of. We will know more about leaks after demolition. So I need to know where to begin. From sheetrock wall to sheetrock wall, the measurement is 57 3/4 inches. From ceramic tile back to edge of tub is 33 inches. 1. If I put a tub back in, I do not have to worry about a shower pan leaking. What length tub do I order? Is the tub itself actually longer than my dimensions? Should I buy a 5 ft x 3 ft tub? 2. With a tub, I can choose either solid surface walls or tile walls. Will solid surface walls be less likely to leak because there is less caulking/grouting/seams? 3. If I choose a solid surface shower pan, will I have more chances for leaks? I have no idea what is under the tub now. What kind of changes will have to be made to change from tub to shower pan? Highly skilled "good" contractors will need to drive 1.5 to 2 hours one way to get where I live. That means 3-4 hours per day is driving time. Trip charges would be a huge chunk of the cost. Plus it would take forever to get finished. 4. Would a tub installation with solid surface walls be finished quicker than any other combination? 5. Where do most showers leak? Corners? Thanks.
