What are your recent experiences with Hortico?
Comments (11)I placed an order for 4 hard-to-find Austin roses (Cressida, English Garden, William Morris, and Claire Rose) in early fall and requested November delivery. The cost of the roses was $14.99 and the shipping was reasonable, around $10 for all 4. Like you, I have read that a number of very experienced rose growers who frequent these forums, have had terrible experiences with orders from this company. Specifically, receiving mis-labeled roses and/or specimens that were either dead (or nearly dead) or very small and of sub-standard size. My expectations were not terribly high, but I was willing to take the risk, hoping that even half of the roses sent would be viable and correctly labeled. I received an email in November, stating they were having some minor problems in shipping their November orders. The roses arrived in early December. I was very pleased with the condition and size of the plants sent. They don't look like the many of the roses produced in the US, which are grafted onto Dr. Huey rootstock and with thick canes (perhaps 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch thick). The roses sent are grafted onto Rosa multiflora rootstock and have twiggy canes that are mostly in the 1/8 to 1/4 inch range and around 12 inches long. The number of canes in my specimens are in the range of 5 to 10 canes per plant and are all plump and loaded with axillary buds that are on the verge of breaking now. The roots are also of smaller caliper and are very plentiful. The length of the roots averaged 10-12 inches, but there were some roots 15 inches or longer. The plants are of the size that I have received from Pickering Nurseries (another Canadian company) that also grafts onto Rosa multiflora. I know that some have problems with roses grafted onto this rootstock, but I have had nothing but favorable results in growing roses on this rootstock in 2 locations in CA for over 10 years. I have a book that has detailed, closeup photos of the leaves, stems, and flowers of 3 of the 4 roses that I ordered. The prickles/thorns of one of these specimens (Cressida) do not match the photos in the book (nor my memory of this rose which I have grown in the past). I have contacted Hortico explaining my concern; they responded the next day, stating that I should plant the rose and take a photo of the flowers and send it to them. They said that they would replace it if it wasn't the right rose. I do know that many others have had poor experiences with this company in the past, to the point that they have stated that they may never again order from them regardless of more recent reports of favorable experiences. I can certainly understand their frustration. I am all but certain that all my specimen, now in 5 gallon pots with good potting soil, will survive. It remains to be seen how many of them will turn out to be the correct variety, and how the company will resolve the problem if some turn out to be mislabeled. At this point, I am pleased with my experience and hopeful that most will be of the correct variety. Only time will tell if my optimism is justified....See MoreMaytag Maxima steam washer/dryer or Whirlpool Duet washer/dryer
Comments (3)We are choosing a new washer/dryer set and would like to buy something in the mid-range. I had a Miele set in our previous home for the last 15 years, which I absolutely loved, but think that for half the price I might be able to get something that works well enough. There seems to have been a lot of changes in the mid-range since I last made a purchase. I'm considering either the new Maytag Maxima steam set or a Whirlpool Duet steam set. I want to have something that will do a good job on delicates (something that Miele does extremely well) and will also sanitize my micro fibre cleaning cloths. Any comments or suggestions?...See MoreWhirlpool Duet 9400 Washer died in 3 years- what to buy next?
Comments (23)Heater will NOT engage in normal no matter what. I often use wrinkle free for clothes, husband's dress shirts, sometimes towels. This will not allow a max spin though. I use extra white for white sheets/towels/socks. Usually with extra warm or hot temp and sometimes extended and/or prewash. I have used custom for kids' clothes warm with a max spin speed. I have used express for bathing suits/towels after a day of swimming. A little Vaska on express and everything is fresh for the next day. These items don't really need to be washed daily so express is great (30 minutes). I have used delicates/hand wash for ... well delicate items. This setting works great. More soaking less tumbling. I have used woolens for wool sweaters also great. I LOVE the comforter setting. It will "vent" the item(s) first - wet them thoroughly before it adds the detergent. Very smart. I almost always use the sensitive setting which uses a higher spin speed between wash and rinse and uses an extra rinse. I don't like too much residual detergent smell (if possible). I've used clean machine. I used table linens a few times for table cloths - not really sure what makes that setting good for them. They turned out just fine. The only program I was not thrilled with was the dress shirts one. It only does a medium spin and left the shirts quite wet. I prefer wrinkle free for them (but that's me). I have used prewash and extended. If items are noticeably dirty I use a prewash. I have used extended if I think they need a little longer tumbling. The more agitation the better the wash. Shorter cycles are not the answer for clean items. Gosh ... have fun and keep us posted on how it's going....See MoreSamsung washer and dryer - my horrible experience
Comments (18)I also find it odd that the replacement washer had the same issue. It makes me feel like _I'm_ not using the washer correctly. But, this isn't my first front loader, and with a household of 3 adults, we don't do that much laundry. I know the shipping bolts were not removed until delivery. However, they did place the washer and dryer on their backs outside my home to screw in the pedestals before bringing the units into my house and up the stairs. I don't think they removed the shipping bolts until the washer was in my house on the second floor. The one to two week turnaround time to get a service appointment has been standard during this washer/dryer saga. I'm not sure if the Sears services all appliance brands they sell, or just Kenmore, but in either case they are 'backogged' enough that this much time is needed to get an appointment....See MoreHU-16168550092
