When to use an Arbor, Trellis, or Obelisk?

Hi friends! Here’s the delimma: Laguna, Quicksilver, Kiss Me Kate, and Florentina are all new roses in pots. Based on hmf pics, it looks like Laguna is a monster, Kiss Me Kate looks tame, Quicksilver and Florentina look bigger but managable. Which sort of support structure would you recommend for each? I also have a wooden fence I can tie into, and I’m able to peg too. Thanks for the tips!

Sunny I have a couple of the one you mentioned. Laguna is so large after 2 years on my neighbors fence I decided it needed to be moved (5-6 feet tall wood fence). It looked like it was going to break the fence if I gave it a few years. I think a sturdy arbor would be correct choice for this one.

I have several quicksilvers that have been lingering in too much shade at the lake. I just moved them to a sunny location. The canes I have gotten are thick and kind of stiff so probably a good option against a fence which is what I am trying now. They could probably be trained on an obelisk with lots of care while the canes were very young but I have a feeling it doesn’t want to bend much. Also it would work on an arbor anything that didn’t require lots of bending. Looking forward to seeing your roses.

Basically I think that Quicksilver would be fine without anything. I have mine on ( sort of ) an arched trellis. But so far it's sturdy and upright and blooms from bottom to top.

I could never get Florentina to even bend lol

Golfguy, Hum, now is the clothesline in dirt or is there concrete all around the bottom of the posts? It would definitely be great support. I'm thinking those clotheslines look more like the supports they use for grapes. My only other thought is that with a clematis or honeysuckle you'd have to make sure it was one that is the smaller height version unless you somehow want to put extensions on top to give support to taller growing vines. This is what I did with an old patio umbrella. It's achcored in a PVC pipe bracketed to the wood raised flowed bed. Last year I had this morning glory. It didn't come back this year so I planted a passion flower vine. It's almost to the top now.. Let us know what is decided to do and how it all turns out. Thank you so much for the heads up Jackie, I'll now see how much the copper pipe and tubing will cost me! Jerijen, I don't think any thief would be bold enough to try and make it through my 'siepe rustica' - a hedgerow I devised because we weren't allowed to fence our property. I planted it in January 2012 and it's now about 1.5 - 2 metres tall - a mix of blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose and fire thorn. Each one with thorns more vicious than the last - where there's a willÃ¢ÂÂ¦Ã¢ÂÂ¦ :-)) Veronica, I'm attaching a photo of the tripod I found on the internet - it was on a DIY site (in German) - I used Google Translate to discover that the tripod is made from 3 lengths of 18mm (ÃÂ¾ inch) copper pipe 2.5 metres (about 8 feet) long soldered together at the top and the spiral is an 8 metre length of 1mm copper tubing. One of my neighbours knows a blacksmith who has very reasonable prices so I will ask how much it might cost. I saw somewhere on another site that an advantage of using copper pipe to make an 'obelisk' is that you can hammer some steel reinforcing bars into the ground and then position the copper pipes over them so they will stay well-anchored (we often have very strong winds here so I need to be sure it won't be blown away). This is where the new rose will be going, now that the nandina infestation and about 100 asiatic lilies have been removed (hopefully we got them all). seil/annt: I think that may rule out the Jeanne Lajoie; keeping it tamed to a reasonable size looks like it'll require more time and energy than I have right now. hoovb: The outer ring of that bed is Iris germanica 'New Dawn' so I'd like something that's not the same color. Lunar Mist is pretty though... Might recommend it to my mother, who collects yellow roses. michaelg: I may take another look at the Aloha, since the color is similar to the Colette; I like repeat bloomers, and I'll need a focal point once the iris fade at the end of their season. Maybe, hopefully your fence is studier than ours which was built by our neighbors around 20 years ago. Laguna seems veeery large

My Laguna is on a 6 ft cedar fence too. She’s a big girl but I will just pull as many canes sideways that I can amd the rest I will leave for the deer to prune
