I'm giving up on my English Garden dream
Comments (46)a. the tall skinnny evergreen might be sky pencil holly b. salvia greggii & knockouts (already mentioned) are perfect, i think, for those areas - both are relatively zero-maintenance - you'd only have to "climb up there" once a year c. i agree with the comment that the stonework/concrete will increase the ambient heat - native & drought-tolerant is the way to go if you want low-maintenance d. i've got some purple heart, if you want some - they do spread, but not in an invasive way - they're native to mexico & can handle the heat e. there's someone on our forum who describes their style as "native texas cottage" or something similar - who is that? not exactly an english garden counterpart, but similar - is it the orderly, geometric, trimmed "english garden" that you like, or the overflowing, miss marple "english garden" that you prefer? - that would help us make texas-friendly suggestions f. your structure would look wonderful with a local native flowering vine - have you already told us what part of texas? - that would also go a long way in lowering the ambient temp...See MoreMy dream is coming true
Comments (12)Thanks everyone. I knew this was the right place to share my excitement with and be understood :) ~Candy - DH decided this is too big of project for him to take on by himself. The carpets have to be removed as well as baseboards and then the baseboards would have to be put back up. We are going with Lumber Liquidators and using their contractors for installation. They say it will take 3 days to complete the project. We are going with a thicker 12 mil product which should last us a long time. It's just the 2 of us and the small pup so we shouldn't be too hard them :) When we went to the showroom to order the price was actually lower than stated online! We were thrilled with that good news!! We had already planned to take the last week of June off from work for some much needed R&R and they were able to get us on the install schedule for then. So much for R&R right? As far as a hutch or buffet table, it will just have to speak to me. We will wait until the floors are done and move the table in before we decide what will work in the room. I am not opposed to doing a refurb on a thrifted piece! I will post pictures of the progress as it happens. Stay tuned LOL. Comments (6)We built off Cool House plan chp-31382. Not a 'farm house plan' and has an attached oversize garage. The nice thing about an attached garage is with any luck, you can orient it on the west side of the house to 'hide' a sustantial part of the house behind it to minimize solar heat gain. One reason we picked this plan was the all hip roof that is stronger and gets an insurance discount here in hurricane country. Also, I wanted to go with a single level home as it's easier to manage heat gain. A 2 story is difficult to manage window and wall heat gain like you can do with a single story with oversize eaves. A metal roof or radiant barrier in the attic can compensate for the extra roof area with the single story. We've ended up with a 2000 sq ft home with an average $130 power bill (includes pumping from well). 10 foot ceilings and heat recovery unit on A/C also helps. I'd suggest you spend some extra time researching all the little things that can add up to substantial energy bill savings as you narrow your plan search. Good luck, Gary...See MoreMy dream is Belinda's Dream
