Kitchens Design Dilemma

alternative to brava Marfil? help!

We are redoing our kitchen but with the idea that we will be selling in the near future. This is a fairly simple home and we don’t want to outbuild the rest of the house with this redo. Brava marfil is the perfect color quartz to go with the off-white cabinets, but it’s $1800 more than we’d like to spend. Does anyone have a lower-end alternative to this color? The rest of the house is warmer so I’m trying to avoid anything too grey or cool.

I would not do quartz. I would do granite. Less money and more intrinsic value. If not granite, I would do wood/butcher block. If not granite or wood - I’d do Formica/laminate. I would not waste money on quartz - especially for a flip.

But how far along are you on these renovations? Are these ”off-white” cabinets already in place?

If you are selling soon, you may be better off selling the house as is. I can just about guarantee you that the next owner will tear out what you are doing - especially because wood for cabinetry is very much back en vogue now, the white cabinets are way beyond overdone at this point - and quartz is right now about 10 minutes shy of its 15 minutes of fame.

illini - hahaha "I suck at this stuff". I think we are not alone! :) I have not heard of them. When we did our last kitchen we actually decided to go direct through a fabricator to save cost (cut out the middle man). We weren't replacing cabinets so it seemed to be the logical choice. We checked out 3 but over here on the west side. One looked like he was about to go under, the second was very 'you don't want this, don't do that' and kinda crabby. The 3rd was Kowalski. Said they COULD and WOULD do what I wanted (a radius on our peninsula) but that they free hand it all so that's why sometimes they don't LIKE to as it's more time consuming. They did a great job. So we are going back there from that experience. Uba tuba was our granite - I had one seam at the sink. I thought it was more than acceptable. Hoping to avoid the seam altogether this time though. :)

Slone - I am also in the ABB club and have a busy counter also. I went through various stages and also needed to take a backsplash break! - I didn't want subway tiles and really wanted back painted glass. I finally figured out glass just didn't make it. I have samples from a zillion places. When I saw Chitown's backsplash - a light went off in my head. I am going with a very simple light cream crackle (Grazia Rixi Crema) with a band of accent and possibly a few medallions over the cooktop. I am going to use all 5x5 tiles - the bottom row will be straight, then a row of accent and the tiles above will be set at 45 degrees. There is a recent post (Who's backsplash is this) on the colors. I have a lot of tile samples to share with others...

I'm sort of a lurker here - we're working on the new kitchen plans right now, so I'm just reading about your kitchens. I did a kitchen 5+ years ago with the help of this forum. So here's my two cents on marble countertops. I have always wanted a period kitchen with marble counters.I was talked out of it last time for re-sale issues. This time I'm going for it. I don't like shiny, so I will probably start with it honed. At the beginning of April, we went to Venice and Milan for a week. That trip sealed my marble decision. All you have to do is walk through the churches, up and down the stairs, the sidewalks,touch the railings, the counters in the cafes- all marble, and all white marble. The stuff is, frankly, bulletproof. And more beautiful with all the age and "love" on it than anything I've ever seen. More than 500 years can't be all wrong!

Your sister's kitchen sounds wonderful already. To continue the mood established by her choices, I'd do a matte or soft-sheen surface, rather than high gloss. And since a lot of different materials are being used, I would choose something that blended nicely, rather than adding a large area of strong contrast. A genuine lack of work light will need bigger bulbs, and some light accessories will set off the rich colors beautifully. I personally happen to love kitchens with counters that blend calmly with the lower cabinets (something I discovered by looking at pictures of beautiful kitchens), so that's what I'd suggest. Also, kitchen counters are very busy places visually, as well as functionally, when people are there to notice, so this is also a good trick for keeping the kitchen visually pleasant while in full cooking chaos.

Absolute Black granite, honed or Jet mist granite.

What is "near future" ? Two years? One? Four?

Put the black on there, because the more it mimics soap stone, the better. Show the kitchen and show the rest of the rooms around it - please.

Are these new cabinets? Or you are painting cabinets.?

You have no way of knowing if another selection will yield the price you want. Your best bet is to check with the fabricator and go from there; then you can make a decision.

I would need to see the space but IMO fake plastic stone is never a good choice for kitchen counters . Get a real stone there are 100s to choose from . BTW off white tells us nothing we need pics and post them here in a comment do not start another post.
