Laundry Room Design Dilemma entry

Door Swing - What would you do?

We're expanding our laundry/mud room by about 1'. With the new layout, I'm not sure if I should switch the door swing or not. The door in question is the one on the Bottom/S wall, which comes in from the garage. The door on the RH/E wall goes into the kitchen. The door currently opens towards the kitchen door (shown), but with expanding the room to the left of the door and removing the closet door there, I feel like it might be awkward to open the door into the wide-open room. What are your thoughts?

Confused. Which door are you considering changing the swing on and which way are you considering making it swing?

I wouldn't change it. Say you are bringing in groceries from garage and have both doors open; if you change the swing you would have to close first door before you access second door.

Which door looked open, the glass door or the screen? We've been having a lot of wind here too, our sliding screen on the French door also moved. Since it was windy and the house is vacant, I'd be concerned but not sure I would call the cops. Someone probably looked at the house and forgot to lock everything up. If you know who is listing it, shoot them an email. I just did this with a house up the street, the sign was driven over & bent. Agent must have gotten my email because the sign was fixed within the next 2 days. Since the agent isn't local, you'd think he'd email to say thanks..

It appears to be a carpenter's mistake since the intention of the design is clearly stated on the drawings. Perhaps the windows were installed before the door arrived. IMHO there is no reason to replace anything other than the narrow "picture frame" molding; it's really out of place here. Option A (cheapest) Raise the door head trim and find a way to fill the resulting gap. I would also fill the gap between the door and window jamb trims because these narrow strips of wall look amateurish to me. Option B (best) Use 3/8" or 1/2" flat trim that spans from opening to opening, then add a decorative band molding around the outer perimeter of the entire assembly. The flat part of the trim would be a bit larger at the door head but it would look fine since it's at a door not a window. If the carpenter is good he could add a cove, bevel or bead at the inner edges. That is the way triple openings have been detailed for hundreds of years so I'm surprised the architects or the builder didn't suggest it.

I've never seen a contract so specific as to stipulate whether it was the door trim or countertop that would be notched, so frankly, I don't think you have legitimate grounds to ask for a redo. Your countertop installers took a lot of time and trouble to notch your quartz around your door trim. If they did a good job, then there's nothing wrong with what they did, and you can bet that the person who did the work is feeling pretty proud of himself for having done it well. Being married to the kind of guy who does work like this, I can tell you he'd be plenty hurt and angry if you were to ask for a redo, done the easy (in his book, wrong) way. Let it go -- And try to appreciate that your installers put forth this much effort to do a superior job.

It's good to hear a variety of opinions on the Jenn-Air fridge. Chicgoans, yours might be three years old but Whirlpool sticks with a design for many years, no doubt it's not too different for Jenn-Air. We have lots of freezing going on in our current Whirlpool fridge, but I think a lot of that has to do with the constant opening and closing that goes on with a family of nine.... we must keep the temp down to keep the cabinet cold enough for the milk to taste good, but it freezes lettuce and strawberries. Even our eggs, sometimes. sskit: Where did you buy yours? You got a fabulous deal - what a price! I'm looking at $2900 as the lowest so far for the 72" CD french door fridge. That is so much money, but I have to have the SS all the way around the cabinet. I'm thinking this recession should have more of a downward pressure on appliance prices! Thanks to all who replied. Any other opinions or recommendations?

Which door is the issue . If the garage door there is no way I would change the swiing on thtat since it looks like you have steps going to the door. Have you thought maybe a pocket door where the other one is could be the best choice .

If the Door w/steps is going INTO your laundry......The door will be open for as long as it take you to enter. Meaning you leave it alone. Get in, and let the door slam behind you. That's a fire door btw, to be to code.

Or....... move that door and its steps a few inches left, add inches to the shared kitchen wall....... and POCKET THE DOOR entrance to the kitchen.

What is the traffic path typically, especially when carrying groceries? If you are usually going in and immediately to the right into the kitchen, then I think the door swing you have pictured for the garage door is best. For the kitchen door, you might consider making it a pocket door if that's possible.

We normally go in the mud/laundry room, put away coats/shoes, etc. then go into the kitchen. If I'm carrying stuff, I might set it down in the kitchen then come back out for shoes and what not. I'm not sure that we can do a pocket door there. That wall between the rooms is technically an exterior wall, and the laundry room is cut out of the garage space. The fridge is also right inside the door, on your left, and it has an ice maker. That water might come up through the floor though.

So the garage door would swing against the door into the house from the mudroom? Absolutely not. And I do not believe you can have the garage door swing into the garage with the steps and landing the way they are,

I can’t imagine why you would want to change the swing of the garage door. The kitchen door, however, I wonder…if you can’t do a pocket door (which would be ideal), can it change to swing into the laundry, and against the side wall? Or are there hooks/cubbies all along that wall, in use, that would be blocked?
