Blocks of ice to use in ice boxes in households to delay deterioration of foods, prior to about World War II, prior to the development of refrigeration.

They were carried in rubber tired covered wagons pulled by single horses down many streets of scores/hundreds of cities in the that far developed world. They carried large blocks of ice, with the iceman breaking off a chunk to carry with tongs into the home to put into a compartment at the top of a wooden box shaped somewhat like a modern refrigerator.

There were similar wagons going down the same streets, some carrying bread, others carrying milk, mainly in glass bottles that were returned for washing and refilling. There were small boxes with doors on both inside and outside of the wall, near the back doors of many houses - perhaps you've seen them in recent years in pre-about-1940-built homes. The housewife left empty bottles and a note saying what milk she needed that day ... to store in her icebox, a wooden box looking somewhat similar to a modern fridge having a freezer as top compartment, with the ice being kept there.
